I've just picked up some new wheels for my daily driver but need a fresh set of summer boots for them.
PS4s were my first choice, but my local fitter reckons these Maxxis tyres are as good, Maxxis reckon they've out performed PS4 in tests but I can't find much supporting evidence from our man jon/tyre reviews.
Just curious if any of you well regarded managing directors have tried these. Maxxis Victra Sport 5 is the full name. £100 or so less for a set.
235/45/17 is the size, if it makes any odds!

Sorry should have stated - the fitter isn't making a lot on them. I usually get charged a tenner each to swap them over from whatever I've bought off the internet, but wondered what they could offer in the same category.
In regard to if they were that good, Maxxis would be shouting about them, they are trying to I think. Or certainly were at some point. Their YouTube advert for the tyre is enough to make you not want to buy it, but I guess their marketing budgets are a bit smaller than Michelin/Conti have over here.

Agreed with that one. Just redone the man-maths and with the 'good price' they're actually more like £140 a set less than PS4s. I think I was looking at Primacy 4s before. Perhaps I should just stick some Three As on it and be done.
Michelin, you know what you are getting, in a lot of circumstances it will be the best tyre you can get without wishing to start a holy war, they are the gold standard really and the most expensive a lot of the time, Continental etc are up there but always seems to be Michelin that are what we want to see.
Maxxis I thought was a 1980s Software House that did Sinclair Spectrum platform games.
You get a lot of stuff told to you in tyre places but though tyre fitters are around tyres all day, I doubt they do extensive back to back testing of each brand in wet and dry on the same car, and a lot of the advice will be based on mark up and whats in stock.
Another one is "Made by <insert premium brand>, thats as maybe, but sounds like b

That said, we all have to cut our cloth accordingly, I would avoid the cheapest tyres as they are, mostly, st, successful at keeping your wheel rim off the road but by and large they perform appallingly, people say "well I dont go fast", but you still sometimes need to stop quickly. I wonder how many accidents could have been a near miss instead, or a non event due to crap tyres, I know a family and they buy cheapos and they seem to have a lot of incidents, sometimes ending up in a field upside down.
I would advocate mid range and above, so Maxxis may well fit into that category.
Dont get too into online reviews of tyres, you get folk who are more enthusiastic about justifying buying cheapies and are only used to poor performance, pick a car and put 4 * cheapest budget option on it, then replace with Michelins, cant imagine many, after say a week in various conditions would say the ditchfinders are as good.

Very wise words! I liked the two quotes especially. "Yeah these ChinLong tyres are actually made by Nankang" > words from a post-brexit Britain
I also find reviews for most things not to be worth a toffee. Especially in the track day world, where a tyre/brake pad is only as good as the driver is fast. I think I'll stick with PS4s or perhaps try Conti 6s.

Just curious, you mention 'PS4s', do you mean Pilot Sport 4 or Pilot Sport 4S?
I'm currently running PS4's but I've heard PS4S' are better than MPSS' in the dry and almost as good as PS4's in the wet... Unfortunately only available in 19's in the UK atm.
I have been trying to research these tyres as well as my dad had some fitted as his pirelli p7's on the front would fail the mot and his mechanic who has been doing services to our families cars for years said they came highly recommended.

I know a few folk that have fitted Maxxis tyres (unsure which though sorry) to their daily drivers and haven't been impressed at all...
They're now on Uniroyal Rainsport 5s
For me, the only tyre I've personally found that comes close to the PS4 is the Vredestein Ultrac Vorti
Camskill have some great prices; but not sure that Vred do the Vorti in 235/45/17s

They do quite well, especially when factoring price point.
My dad has them on an XF Sportbrake which I've driven around a bit; Whilst I haven't gone wild in it I'd say they do a reasonable enough job - Quite safe handling, reasonably good grip:- that being said I haven't tried any other tyres on that car so can't offer huge comment beyond that.
Perfectly usable, but come EOL I'd probably replace them with ContiPremiumContact 6's, which seem to be a bit more handling focused than the standard (Non-S) PS4 Whilst maintaining good levels of wear / wet grip etc.
As for the brand, Maxxis aren't unheard of; They're extremely popular for their MTB Tyres, but have only more recently made real efforts with their car tyres. Judging by the performance in tests, they've pretty much jumped directly into the upper mid-range.

Where are they made China? If so I would not fit them even if I could get them for free.....just shop around.....just got 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 AS5 fitted at Halfords £97/ corner in 225/55/17....

Any more recent feedback? It would be good to have confirmation if they are made outside of China or not and what sort of rim protection they offer.
I am tempted by the price of these tyres against seemingly well rounded performance. The Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3 is an obvious rival, but even that is £50 more for a set in my 19" sizes.
