Been looking for paint stripper but Halfrauds and the other car accesory shops round here dont stock it anymore.

Anyone know if normal Nitromores (house) paint stripper would work...it says to scrape off the paint with a scraper, dont really want to do that if I can help it

ok firstly , yes Nitromors will work just fine , most paint strippers are roughly the same. My advice is (and i,m a car painter with more than a few years experiance) get the yellow pages out and fine a bodyshop supplier or google for a branch of Brown Brothers, most of the major suppliers produce their own automotive grade paint stripper its normally cheaper than halfrauds and i suspect its stonger but if you must you can get Nitromors at B&Q
BUY SOME GOOD HEAVY SOLVENT RESISTANT GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION this shit stings burns and is nasty dont get it on your skin if you dou wash it off immidiatly it will hurt.
its damm good for use on cars with multiple layer of pain or "soft" paint thats a problem to sand , use a large heavy brush pour drectly onto the panel and spread , dont be skinny or it will dry out too soon then stand back and whatch the paint remove itself this is the fun part take your time and do one panel at once dont be stingy with the stripper
if you feel its too slow, score the surface with very corse paper 40's grit works fine
A final warning it will soften and contaminate any body filler beneath and be prepared to re-do any bodywork as the risk of damage to subsiquent paint is too great be thourough about final cleaning as again contamination is a major issue . I,ve done lots of modern current cars where vandal damage with paint stripper has meant that this was the ony course of action takes me about a day and a half to strip then another day or so spent on cleanup,final sand and prep
oh and it removes everthing keep it away from rubber, upholstery , wheels and as you should get down to pristine bare metal think about a good etch primer as you need some temporary protection against rust (primer is only temporary as its porous but its better than bare steel)
dont ever use it on fiberglass unless you feel the need to buy a new car
you seemed concered about scraping , done right with a little paiientce scraping the paint can be done with a plastic bodyfiller spreader therefore not marking the surface underneath, any probs just mail me

excellent stuff!

The part in question is a metal panel which was used on the roof of 500's in winter, in lieu of the canvas cover. It has a slight texture, which will probably save me work. Beauty is I can work on it away from the car and there are no rubber/plastic fixings

ok just looked at your other post, bushes in fact almost anything can be undersealed but yes keep it well away from anything that gets hot and definately dont get it on brakes
