Lash cap supplier

Never heard of a "lash cap" so Googled.
"In today's higher rpm engines, the tip of the valve stem is subjected to a tremendous pounding. The best solution to this problem is COMP Cams' lash caps. These hardened lash caps are precision-machined and ground perfectly flat, to maintain accurate valvetrain adjustment." (Summit Racing)
Isn't that how valve stems are made?
A/ to wthstand the "tremendous pounding"
and
B/ "ground perfectly flat."
What am I missing here? I don't think it's lash caps.

If you don't know what one is you're unlikely to be of any use, but for your education:
In his fingers is a lash cap, used for setting valve clearances (cap which sets lash = lashcap).

Land Rover 200/300TDi (Defender, Discovery 1) and earlier 2.5 diesel engines use something very similar in appearance referred to as valve stem caps to protect the top of the valve stem and the rocker surface. AIUI if these are missing then damage to the valve stems & the rockers will occur. "In today's higher rpm engines, the tip of the valve stem is subjected to a tremendous pounding. The later TD5 (Disco 2, Defender) uses lash adjusters.

Excellent question. I don't know the answer - possibly to spread the load? - & later engines don't have them.
If you read the link you'll note there is a suggestion that some were made of cheese....
(The TD5 lash adjusters are hydraulic: http://workshop-manuals.com/landrover/defendertd5/... )

Is this cost cutting? It's cheaper to make a little 'lash cap' than treat the valve stem, 'properly'?
John
It's weight saving. Lighter valve train, more control, less valve bounce, less wear & tear. Used in bike engines a lot.John
They can also get you out of the st if you've run out of the original style valve shim range.

I have to admit my ignorance & ask how adding something to the valve train reduces the weight?
Because it might allow a lighter bucket.Kent, Supertech, Ferrea, Arrow etc ?
Or can OEM replacements for the part not work ? or not available ?
They'd probably be more common on multivalve engines with smaller stems, 7-8mm is fairly large diameter though, if you're referring to the actual valve stem dimension.

As for UK stockists...well we know how that usually goes. Few ever seem to keep anything in stock. Nevlock keep some Ferrea stuff.
Steve/SMG at Roland Allsop keep Supertech stuff, but again, whether they stock your specific item...who knows

Looks like a Ducati Desmo valve opener shim. Available in both 7 and 8mm diameters and many different thicknesses for setting the valve clearance. In his fingers is a lash cap, used for setting valve clearances (cap which sets lash = lashcap).

Valve stems especially the exhaust ones have to transmit heat and use materials suitable for that function. Sometimes those materials aren't hard enough which is when a lash cap can help. The ls7 has lash caps but only on the exhausts. Those are 8mm dia and probably used also on the 6.2l engines.
