I’m restoring some old 1960’s metal headlight units. One of them has some pitting from rust. I’ve sanded the old paint and rust down to bare metal but I am left with some rusty pitted areas. What is the best way to deal with the rust pits? Can I use some rust killer (e.g. Kurust) to neutralise the rust and then put a thin layer of filler over the pits, sand and paint as normal?

Thanks,

TSS

You really want to be removing the rust rather than trying to convert it.
Sand blasting is the best method.
If you have a compressor then one of these would do the job

I use one myself

Thanks, I didn’t realise you could buy sand blasting kit so cheaply. I can borrow a compressor and at that price it’s worth a go.

The Electrolysis method is your best bet. Only attacks the rust leaving clean metal behind.
Sandblasting is horribly messy in comparison.
