California over Christmas - Automoblile things to do?
Discussion
Is it a good idea to California over Christmas? My wife and I are both off work for two weeks so we have decided to visit California for 8 to 10 days (there is flexibility).
It would be our first time visiting America and aside from doing the usual tourist things, what car/automobile things are there that we can do? As we will be visiting while its Christmas I'm assuming this may limit our options aswell?
I already have the Petersen Museum on the list but not sure what else there is that we can do? Our 2 yr old will be with us so would need to be family friendly.
We are renting a car and wondering if it is worth driving along the coast to San Francisco and flying back from there?

(as in, I can't believe you are not renting a car!)
The Petersen is very good, make sure you do the Vault Tour as that's the best bit.
I was recommended the Peter Mullin museum, but it has strange opening hours which didn't fit in with my time table - http://www.mullinautomotivemuseum.com/
id not want to be there without a car

Almost nothing will be accessible without a car, unless you are planning on staying in a resort your entire holiday. It would be our first time visiting America and aside from doing the usual tourist things, what car/automobile things are there that we can do? We've done LA over christmas two years running as my wife is from there...
-Renting a car is an absolute must, you won't get by without.
-The Petersen is a must-see, it's worth springing extra for the vault tour. My MiL works there, wave if you see her
-There are numerous car meets that go on throughout LA and the valley over christmas, http://www.socalcarculture.com/events.html
-Do drive plenty of the canyon roads, Mulholland and Topanga are great, but there's quite a few more.
Le me know if you want to know more or anything specific.

Thank you for the information, I forgot about the canyon roads!-Renting a car is an absolute must, you won't get by without.

Space Shuttle Endeavour would be quite cool to go to aswell so I'll add that to our list. My son will love that.
Why not do Highway 1 either SF to LA or the other way round? absolutely fantastic road trip, every town is different. You cannot see California without a car unless you stay in a city. Many cities are not walking friendly though. San Francisco is different and you really can explore on foot then get a cab when tired. There's also the California mountains and through Death Valley to Vegas if you feel more adventurous. Road trip is the way to go - fantastic experience..
If you don't like Christmas commercialisation in the UK you'll hate it in the USA it really is an extreme tat and nauseating 'goodwill' fest.

Apologies for the thread hijack but where do you recommend staying in LA? All the attractions seem quite spread out.-Renting a car is an absolute must, you won't get by without.

I don't really know which areas are good in LA, just heard some of the places mentioned in Tupac songs

Is indeed the problem, so whereever you stay it will be a lengthy drive to most destinations.I stayed in Pasadena on my last trip. Which gives you a chance to drive the old skool freeway north out of Downtown LA which is all curves and low bridges (lorries are banned).
Close to US2 across Angeles Crest too.
Downtown Pasadena is also walkable between the various bars and restaurants which is somewhat unusual for many LA districts.

We stayed in the tangerine in Burbank, quiet but seemed a decent location. Near universal and walking distance to Warner brothers if you're thinking of doing either of those. Not sure if it runs over Xmas but Bob's big boy diner is 5 minutes walk away, Friday nights are their car meet nights. Some stunning stuff turns up, jay Leno occasionally makes an appearance.I don't really know which areas are good in LA, just heard some of the places mentioned in Tupac songs
