Subaru Impreza WRX STI | PH Fleet

A fond farewell to the Impreza from Ben L, and a warm welcome from its new owner. In Montpellier...

All good things must come to an end. While the past year of Impreza ownership has not been cheap by any means, it was everything I expected it to be and then some. The drive was so much more engaging than I'd anticipated; the appreciation shared by strangers and its infinite ability to make me smile.

Every journey was an occasion. I'll really miss looking out over the bonnet scoop with the Boxer burble echoing around me. My fondest memory has to be taking my dad for a drive and letting him have a blast around some of my local roads in Kent. It was his and my grandfather's motoring passion throughout my childhood that led me to buying the car after all.

My ownership of VK53 NCA wasn't as extensive as PHer tahicks2003 five-year tenancy, but with an ever-growing wish list of cars to buy and a wedding to pay for, it was time to bid farewell. If I'm honest, I was dreading the prospect of selling a Subaru Impreza. Whilst every owner I've met has bucked the stereotype, I couldn't help but feel that it's the sort of car to attract time wasters.

Still, I posted my advert up in the PH classifieds and waited for the phone to start ringing. That was 10pm at night and by lunchtime the following day, I'd received an email from a chap in France regaling me with a story about how he'd only just imported a Honda S2000 from the UK a couple of weeks earlier, only for someone to crash into him and write it off.

Within 48 hours Tanguy had transferred the funds to me and booked his flight to come over with his dad and pick up the car before setting off on the 750-mile journey back to Montpellier. While it wasn't easy saying goodbye, it made me happy that the car was fulfilling someone else's life-long dream of Subaru ownership - one inspired by their dad, too. Therefore, it seems fitting that I leave Tanguy to finish my last fleet article.

As a child, an Impreza was my ultimate dream car. I have fond memories going to watch them at the Rallye des Charbonnières being only five years old. After my wrecked S2000 I decided it was an opportune moment to look for a Subaru. It might seem crazy to look for a Subaru in the UK as you can find plenty in France, but they are way more expensive and buying a clean fully stock example without breaking the bank is impossible.

It's getting more and more usual, thanks to lower exchange rates and French people coming to terms with the fact that owning a car with a steering wheel on the wrong side is not that bad! That is why more Frenchmen are now coming to the UK to buy cars.

The weekend arrived at last and I was off to the UK with my dad. The night at the hotel before was the longest of my life! Ben nicely came to pick us up from the hotel and bring us home to take care of all the paperwork. It was great to experience British B-roads on the drive back. As expected the Impreza was lovely and in perfect condition all around. The fact that Ben worked at PH was truly reassuring.

It was finally mine and we were off to the Eurotunnel, ready for our (very) long journey down to the Mediterranean Sea. The first impression I had driving the car is how big the scoop is, it was very distracting for the first few miles. Just by looking at it you know that you are driving a very special car.

I've driven more than 3,000 miles with the car already and I am absolutely in love with it! I plan on keeping it as long as I can and even though I might do a few small mods to it, my goal is to keep the possibility to bring it back to OEM spec.

Always had a secret lust for these things. These represent the high water mark for Subaru in my opinion. Gotta love that WRC styling and gold wheels! Hope it brings you many happy drives!

Great story that is what PH is all about. I have just bought a Golf R32 in NZ and love every minute of it.

I’ve found it always helps to sell a toy to a proper petrolhead as it eases the pain. A Subaru Impreza is also on my bucket list of cars to own as the warble of the engine is iconic as that of the original (although now less affordable) Audi Quattro.

Couldn't agree more. In this era subaru had a lot of really interesting cars. The forester STI, a variety of fast turbo legacy models and the impreza. Their line up these days looks dull by comparison.
Shame this is off the fleet. I've enjoyed the vicarious experience.

Owned a WR1 and, other than my late lamented UR Quattro, Mk2 RS2000 and an RS500, is the only car I truly miss since I started my motoring odyssey in 1980.

Sounds an excellent ownership and buying experience for our friend on the continent. What now Ben? As we seem to be following each other car-wise (Clio, Megane, Impreza) it must be an FK2 Civic Type R surely?!

I'll third that! I'm glad you've enjoyed the content and I'll certainly miss it. I won't rule out returning to another Subaru one day smile

The replacement shares a few similarities with the Impreza, but it isn't an FK2 or anything Japanese. Time for me to get one up on you for a change hehe

Congrats Tanguy on getting a meticulously maintained example from Ben. I'm sure it was worth the long trip.

I sold my 172 Cup to a guy from France. He barely spoke any English, but was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Selling cars to Brits usually involves dealing with hundreds of time-wasting s before you get one decent buyer.

I sold my Civic Type R to a pair of absolute bell ends from Manchester. I was convinced the one who was buying it had never driven a manual car before, given the cack handedness of his gear changes. I suspected the car wouldn't survive the trip from Newcastle to Manchester.

Last time I looked the car was still on the road, taxed and MOT'd, but I wonder how many clutches and synchro rings that car has been through since I waved it goodbye.

We shall see! l I am potentially going to get something special next - I'm about to put my FK2 up for sale next week, I hope I get a proper enthusiast come and see it rather than the 'best price today cash innit m8' numpties.

Intrigued to see what's next - I'm guessing AWD if it's like the Impreza but not Japanese?

ETA.. Ooh 1000 posts beer

Good luck! I know a good classifieds site for selling your FK2... Yes you're correct on AWD – coming to a new PH fleet article near you soon biggrin

What's next for you? Congrats on reaching your 1,000 post milestone!

Auto Trader right? wink. I will probably put it on here first before I brave the ebay zombies. So is it a hot hatch or something completely different for you?

Personally I have taken leave of all my senses and the plan is to get an Impreza P1. It's technically a stupid plan, but a PH plan!

Also sold my motorcycle last week to a French resident. For motorcycles there isn't even a steering wheel on wrong side compromise.

That’s funny,some years ago I sold a Westfield XTR2 to a guy in MontPellier

He flew over and drove the car back going underneath all the motorway barriers to avoid the tolls Lol

A crazy dude yikes

Agreed. Last French buyer I sold to was faultless, insisted on paying in full the week before collection, and it wasn't a small amount either. Lovely guy with a similar passion for cars to myself, although we had to do a little translation via a family member of his who came with him to collect !

Enjoy the Impreza Mr new owner !

My last Subaru was this model with the DCCD and water injection, my 4th in a line of Imprezas and probably my favourite. I'd buy a Subaru again in a flash, just for the sheer enjoyment of driving, if only Mr. Piggy-bank was as full as he once was.

Forget the creature comforts like electrically heated steering wheels and bum-warmers, the really important stuff is under the hood and under the floor. At my (now) son-in-law's 21st celebrations, I spent a good part of the day taking excited young adults for spins in my MY2004 STi. During my last visit to the not-so newly weds, I drove around to the parking spots at the back of their new house, and there, parked beside the enormous white (do they do any other colour?) Mitsubishi PHEV "Mammy-mobile" was "my car"!!! Pristine, factory-spec, Halfords free and whispering in my ear, "Drive me, old Dude, drive me!" I'm working on it.

Thanks for the co-written article, 10/10.
