This seems to be certainly what is on the roof from that description, there is a substantial amount on the roof whereas the body work elsewhere it’s minor specs scattered about
I'd suggest using autoglym tar remover generously first before trying a clay bar.

Much easier!
That's what I do when I can be arsed. It's a thankless task.

Hope you don't mind me piggybacking on your thread OP rather than starting a new one, but I also have black spots - tar I'm sure - on the lower halves of the doors and the sills of a white car, along with little rusty looking spots which I assume are iron deposits as it's not actual rust, car is 1yr old.

Is there a product that deals with both of these at the same time?

If so, what is the best/recommended at the moment - bonus points for being easy to obtain from Halfords or Eurocarparts.

Thanks for the recommendation, however the first review of it I read (from a pro detailer) suggests it may not be the best in clumsy hands as there's potential for damage and marring of the paint, and it also suggests not using unless you are correcting paint afterwards?

I am a total amateur albeit I buy decent mitts, shampoo, wheel cleaner, a bit of Autoglym SRP and EGP now and again, but have never clayed a car previously and don't want to risk damage if there's a potentially safer alternative in a spray bottle!

Autoglym have both magma and tar and glue remover so both should be in halfords.

Autosmart tardis is the best tar remover might seem pricey £32 for 5 litres but its brilliant stuff
spray on leave for 3-4 minutes and wipe off

you can get smaller tins but they can be £20 for 1 litre

Autoglym stuff will be fine if the convenience of popping to Halfords is a priority.

Bear in mind that using a clay bar on paintwork, however clean, will always cause some micro scratching of the clear coat. The only time I clay a car is prior to machine polishing.

Indeed, claying a car causes marring and you either accept that or polish the car with a machine afterwards, I always use clay as a last resort because of this.
