Although they re not without any benefits, car care products are basically BS.

It came as no surprise to me.
I would like to know what a 'ceramic coating' has in common with ceramics, ie things made of clay that you fire in a kiln. I can't see any connection between piece of crockery or a wall tile, and a liquid you spray onto a car... or have they just used the term 'ceramic' to mean 'hard'?

These car care products were reviewed on R4 s Sliced Bread, where they rate things to conclude whether they are SB or BS.

Don't think it said anything we don't already know really. No harm in spending money on things you enjoy and if playing around and polishing your car makes you happy then great.

FWIW about 6 weeks ago I washed my car and clayed, cut and repolished the bonnet then waxed and used a sealant on it. The rest of the car was left just washed. Today after it rained the bonnet looked cleaner than the rest.

I totally agree, if you enjoy looking after your car like that, and many do, carry on.

Don’t you have Google in your house?

ceramic coating is called "ceramic" because its primary ingredient is silicon dioxide SiO_2 which is also a key component of ceramics and glass.

Sometimes it's quicker/easier/better to ask the experts than search the world, but since you mentioned it, my google says: 'Ceramic coatings are liquid polymers primarily containing silicon dioxide (\(SiO_{2}\)), which hardens into a durable, glass-like protective layer when applied' and 'Ceramic is a hard, durable, and heat-resistant material made from inorganic, non-metallic substances like clay that are shaped and then fired at high temperatures.'

Now we add some basic science. 'Key component' is no explanation - example: table salt is made from a metal that burns in air and a gas used in chemical warfare, but you'll happily put it on your chips. If you want to make silicon dioxide (basically sand) ceramic you'll need to heat it to 1,500C, which isn't going to end well on a car. In short, the coatings may contain the raw ingredients of ceramics, but they are not ceramic. It's marketing smile
