Ownership of a decent-looking E39 M5 now has an entry fee of close to $20k...

Its done a few kays, but that appears to be an awful lot of car (or heartache) for the money. And such an understated colour too - a cheeky 525i badge on the back could be fun

Trying to find a tried and tested donor car/engine in Aus is a challenge though as the usual suspects such as Civic Type R are rather thin on the ground. Currently looking at a Honda engine from the horrendous looking Odyssey - There's a 200hp 4 cylinder VTEC hiding in some of those things and they're cheap as chips at pickles.
Are you going to keep some sort of build diary ? I'd be interested in reading it if you were.

How about Astra H 2.0 or 2.2 sri ?

Good luck anyway.

I saw that E39 on Czarsales. Bargain, if it's mechanically sorted!

I just picked up a GTI 40th Anniversary or Clubsport as they're known to the rest of the world.

I traded in a 2003 E55 AMG. Sad to see it go but tired of things going wrong with it and the big bills to go with it.

The engine in the Golf is a bit dull compared to the beast in the AMG but it's more fun to drive at lower speeds and the radar cruise control is a great feature. I test drove a Golf R last year but it didn't do anything for me, I just had more fun in the GTI plus you get more feel with it being FWD and it's lighter and better handling too.

Funny you mention the FWD feeling better. My current daily is a V6 Commodore wagon, prior to that I had a V8. A few weeks ago I borrowed a 1.6 manual FWD hatchback (European and coming soon wink ) and had great fun. It reminded me of my youth spent ragging a Pug 309 to death.

Glad I got the 928 when I did - this M5 is now up for $18,500 - apparently needs a tie-rod and a tyre for next month's rego...

Noice! Is that to go into the boot of the Lincoln for when you can't park close enough to your destination??

And what is it, apart from more fun?? C'mon, details, man, details! biggrin

Just a 250 Virago, Perfect city get around, I should take this out of this thread though. Not ridden it yet, but very happy with it.

I am looking around for either a Clubman that needs work or even a Reverse Trike that has been road registered in NSW ( Nanny State Wonderland)

As and when I start making physical progress I'll probably start a page in Readers Cars on PH.

Currently working on the CAD model to make a few adjustments from the original plans I purchased from the US.

Got my build authorisation from the Department of Transport the other day which will allow me to get it registered once completed.

Engine will likely be a 2.0 from a recent Lancer as they can run easily on an aftermarket ECU and you can fit an aftermarket turbo kit easily too. I found a wrecked Lancer on Gumtree and called the seller who wanted $1000 for the engine but I had to pick up the shell and remove the engine myself. No big deal but work got in the way and I didnt go ahead. Four weeks later he calls me back to say he's had no interest and was I still interested. I asked what his best price was and he said $1000. I'm going to let him sweat it out for a couple of weeks before turning up with $500 cash to see what he says.

Still mean to get down to the auctions one day soon but the wrecks go through mid-wednesday morning which makes it hard with work.

There's a reverse trike for sale here in WA that claims to be the only one in the country. Its a TR1ke and looks pretty smart but the $50,000 asking price seems a bit steep for something that can be built for a fraction of that price if you have the time, skills and inclination.

So I ignored the bit about getting a 4WD and just put a deposit down on a demo Skoda Octavia RS wagon.

Thanks for the update.
Good luck with it all.
Look forward to the build blog.
