Inscribed VIN on a US inport

A friend of the family has an old porsche in Australia - likely that it was imported form the US or canada.

Car is marked as an import and the badge states that it was converted from LHD to RHD.

What is puzzling though is that the VIN is inscribed rather than printed. Thought a factory VIN would have been printed.

Could anybody advise why this might be and or if there is any significance?

Factory VINs are always inscribed so they are almost impossible to change. Usually on the bulkhead / firewall.

If it is a converted import it may well have multiple VINs - original factory, Australian VIN given to it when it was imported (also inscribed), and a compliance plate or sticker which will gave the Aus VIN. There might also be a plate confirming the conversion was signed off as approved by an Engineer or the applicable roads authority.

Yep - big sticker stating converted to RHD with a VIN number imprinted ... with a typo of course
