Hello All, just a quick note to say HI As my family and I will be landing in Melbourne on the 29th to start my 4 year 457.

Holden Commodore sportwagon SV6 is ready for me to collect from the dealers and need to grab a car for the Mrs. Then in due course a classic V8 and bike as things settle down in my new job over there.

Currently looking for a place to rent (short term let in place already) and getting school sorted for my two lads.

Can’t wait!

Wish I was at your stage... We are at the family planning stage and as such my Aus adventure needs to end in the next 6-9 months (started Feb 2016.

Too far away from the family to ask for help with family if I'm away from home, we are not residents to get the full level of care that OH will need and my company won't cover it (not married), plus to top it off, the folks are getting older and as such, we would like to be around them (within 2-3 hour flight) if we need to make any dash anywhere.

10 years ago I would be staying here longer (Sydney), but I'm glad of the opportunity and its been an amazing piece of my life.

Welcome, Sir thumbup

I understand the 457 has been abolished and replaced with some other type - just a reminder as you'll likely be filling in a few forms that will require the correct reference.

https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/457-abolition-...

Don't forget zero tolerance and heavy enforcement of speed limits down in Mexico. And hook turns where signed, and don't overtake trams.

Hope you love it, there's a lot to love. I'm in Sydney but have spent many a pleasant time in Melbourne.

457 has been changed (24th April this year) into 2 year and 4 year visas but not abolished completely

457’s will stop being issued next year and instead a new type of visa is going to be created. Holders of 457’s will still be allowed to use them obviously.

If you're free on the weekend of the 1st Dec, there's a big Historic forest rally on in Lakes Entrance - about 3 hours north of Melbourne.

No turbos or 4wd, but lots of Webers gobbling fuel and air.
Our service crew could do with an extra body wink

I visited Melbourne for the first time in January. What a cracking city. Would love an excuse to live over there for a year or three...

The name rings a bell. Is he in the HRA (Historic Rally Association)?

Yes, he was. I think the did the Alpine a couple of times.

He has been working in India for a couple of years.

I am sure I've met him around the rally scene (I started in the 80's).

Chatting to a mate today - does Gary have a son Brendan / Brandon competing in club / state rallying?

His son (Braedon I think) was drifting (as in sliding cars about) a few years back. He may have moved on to rallying.
