2 Door Range Rover project

You can buy thinner stuff - I've used Tecsound 50 before (works well and easy to work with, but doesn't seem to stand up to heat and water so well at its edges).
Thanks for the tip. I had a very close look and in many regards it seems better than the more prevalent Dynomat from the US or the Russian stuff, SilentCoat, both apparently developed from the Cold War. However, today, in memory of the Labour Party I opted for the Russian stuff. It comes in the smallest pieces so should be the easiest to fit.

Good progress, are you planning on putting it inside the doors too?
Yup. I've brand new NOS frames to go in plus the electric set up from a '92 2 door to go in so once the doors are stripped I've been advised that this 2mm stuff will work perfectly by covering as much of the outer skin as possible. I probably can't do much to the inner skin as we'll start having issues fitting the old style of door card on. stevehg1 said:
Yes agreed, I'm planning to just do outer skin too. As you say, with the 2 pad arrangement of the 2 door, there's no option to do anything else.
I was also wondering if there is any gain to lining inside out outer ally panels??
Cheers
Steve
Yup. I'm not sure much more can be done. Just making sure everything is bolted down well to stop rattles is important. I was also wondering if there is any gain to lining inside out outer ally panels??

While I've not updated the thread for a while work has been progressing steadily.
I've just noticed that this thread had sadly succumbed to the PhotoBucket.
The sound deadening is in at the front.
The aircon has all been fitted with new piping to match the early air system to the serpentine engine.
I've sourced an original gun cabinet that will be going off for a refurb. I'll post a picture later.
The top dashboard is currently at the trimmers. I've taken a big punt and decided to have the whole dash trimmed. I remember seeing a W&P car in the 80s that had been done and it did look nice. My driving reasons for doing this though are based around sound and are two fold: my wife bangs on about the ocean of entirely practical and durable plastic (it would appear that she's one of those 'soft touch plastics' lunatics!!). Some leather might create a bit of silence. Secondly, my reasoning for all the sound deadening was to cut out as much of the drivetrain noise as possible and there is almost no space to fit any deadening around the dash so I'm hoping that a little bit of leather might soften some of the noise that comes through there and generally soak up a little more of the noise in the cabin.
I also sent my Monteverdi dash binnacle off to a GRP specialist who has made me a mouldnfrom the original right hand binnacle but also made a mirror for the left. The plan here is to use the LH one to create a glove box. Again, this is a bit of a cosmetic punt and I'll post some pictures later.
Original bumpers, grill and front lights are back on. Need to change the rear lamps to 72 spec, fit the number plate brackets and some 70s era auxiliary lamps to the front and an extremely potent rear fog. It has become very apparent that in foggy conditions the weaker your lights the closer someone will drive to the back of you. The pretty weak Rangie lights lead to having Audis 6 inches from your rear bumper. A proper fog will keep those people at a proper distance as they clearly base their driving distance on some kind of moth gene.

This is the boot cabinet. It used to belong to John Eales and he cut the third draw off. I wasn't going to fit one of these to the car as they fill the boot but in 2 drawer guise it works well.
It needs a good refurb and professional patch up where the third draw was hacked off. It will also be stained darker to match the wood in the main cabin.
I also have a set of picnic tables but am undecided yet as to whether to fit them as it might be a bit of a wood overload and also I'm not convinced they are all that safe when the children are in the back.

Decided to do the refurb on the gun cabinet myself. Fabricated a new side section, filled the wood worm holes and the large chips in the drawer fronts adding fake grain with some Humbrol model paint before staining, varnishing and finally a few coats of lacquer.
Quite pleased with the outcome and that the colour matches the door cappings and dash section.
With the standard engine work now complete and the electrics all fitted the job of reassembling the interior prior to being retrimmed has begun.
The later rear seats are currently being offered up so that the brackets can be fitted in the correct positions:
At the same time the top dash is back from being trimmed and has now been fitted which has allowed for the air con to be installed and the wood trim to be trial fitted before being restored.
This part has been quite time consuming as the dash is 1972, the air con is 1983 and the wood trim is 1994!!!
Over the next couple of weeks hoping to have the rear half of the car sound deadened, rear of the dash back and fitted and the LR sound deadening back in along with carpets etc.
At that point it can go to the trimmers for the seats and door cards to be trimmed to match the dash.
Currently toying with retaining the dark brown centre inserts on the seats to have a ‘funky’ contrast as I always liked the 80s seats which were done that way.

The central locking and electric windows have also been installed.
The dash trim has been relacquered and colour matched to the door cappings. Just needs collecting.
Wiring needs to go in for the cruise control, power points in the rear and then the rubber sound deadening mats can all go in.
The restored and powder coated door frames need to have the NOS quarter light frames and runners fitted and then they can go back in.
Hoping to have it at the trimmers by the end of the month or as close as.
