As XJS photos seem to be popular...and to think Mrs L went for the Captur because the Kadjar felt too big
XJ-S are great for this, despite being long they're low, narrow and do look small compared to a lot of cars (well, most of them do...)

1,280kg v 860kg

Makes me feel not so bad about the weight I have put on in 20 years!

Have you also got faster and safer over the past 20 years?

Perhaps more to the point, rene7's 1970 Lotus 7 was positively bloated compared to the original Seven Series 1, which came in at less than 400 kilos for some engine configurations.

Later K-series Superlight Sevens were over 100 kilos lighter than Rene's too, so if I were him I'd be asking what went wrong in the early '70's to make his model so lardy! wink

In % terms the increase in my weight over 20 years is not as extreme as the Yaris V Pug example I'm pleased to say!

It does make you wonder, why has the motor industry not applied itself to weight saving with same zeal that they have demonstrated to fuel efficiency?

They have but weight saving is extremely expensive, to be honest it's amazing that cars don't weigh more given all the safety, tech and luxury items that are fitted that weren't before.

This.

If you combined the weight of all the stuff we couldn't possibly live without, it would probably be more than a 60s Lotus 7. Air con, sat nav, airbags, electric everything and enough safety gubbins to sink a battleship: must weigh a few hundred kg.

Yaris GR. Over 250bhp and 4wd. Function over form. It's the new thing, many threads over in GG.

I was looking over a GR the other day, what struck me was how small it was, amazing to see it with that 205.

Not really a fair comparison. The 205 GTi was 910kg but the equivalent of the GR Yaris would be the homologation special T16, which weighed 1,300kg by the same measure and made 197bhp from its mid-mounted turbocharged 1.8. So actually weighed about the same, despite being smaller, having no rear seats, and none of the myriad safety features modern cars are burdened with.

I’d absolutely love a T16, gorgeous thing, preferably in Group B Evo II spec with 650bhp.

I like that photo, my first and next car together, although mine were/will be both white.

Because apart from the luxury stuff (which is what, 200kg for heating and ventilation plus ICE?), they are massively stronger structures (just take look at the A and B pillars and ask yourself which you'd rather roll over in), much bigger (because that's what the market demands).

They're also cheaper, more economical and more reliable, so it's not all downsides.

Cant remember where I heard this or read it. Fire fighters have been buying stronger cutting equipment over the lalast decade. When they need to cut people out of their crashed cars they cut off the roof. This is getting harder and harder and hence why they need better equipment.
