Am I right in thinking that "This car belongs to the Pakistani ambassador."
No; he's a High Commissioner, Pakistan being in the Commonwealth (at least at the moment).Sorry, had to be done. This wouldn't be PH without pedantry!
Parrot incoming - I missed the Italian Job reference!

Hmmm I’m not sure any of them are original shortys. I’m 99% confident none were painted silver - why would you repaint?
None were silver originally, because Audi couldn't be sure of the metallic paint process working properly on their new composite material, so the ones that would have been silver to represent the German racing colours were painted white. But I saw that car at RR this weekend and I'm pretty sure it was right - I didn't see the red one though. Also I think there's a video of Hannu Mikkola driving a silver road car up Shelsley Walsh some years ago. As for why anyone would repaint - well, it was a bit different when they were £35k. The rally sport quattros had the higher intake aperture whilst the roadgoing sport quattro had the lower indentation similar to the long wheelbase A1 side quarters.
Quite right, the rally Sport Quattro had the higher intake cut out and the rally lwb A1 had the lower indentation (not cut out)Whilst last of the line lwb A2 had 2 intakes, both cut out.....

re the Aston...my 66 Mustang has the reg.number VAM 27D
I love that. In the seventies my dad had a Triumph 1300 with the registration number ARK 606H. In the early eighties I worked with a guy who had a Triumph 2000 with the plate ARK 66H. When I pointed this out it's hard for me to convey just how disinterested the guy was. I was really disappointed.DickyC said:

Really? I was quoting that from memory of the piece in the Lewandowski book on the car. Now I have to find the book and see if it was incorrect, or whether I've remembered it incorrectly. And then look at all the lovely images.droopsnoot said:

That wasn't a road car, that was a full works Sport, reg number DMN 44, that Hannu had used for the early rounds of the 1986 British Rally Championship, prior to Audi withdrawing after the Grp B accidents in '86.ETA - Hannu at Shelsley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z91JEloD1D4
In July '86 Audi went to Shelsley Walsh with the big Auto Unions to commerate the 50th Anniversary of them competing there in 1936. As such, that works SWB was painted Auto Union silver for the event for Hannu to attempt the closed car hill record, which he duly smashed with a time of 29 point something seconds.
That car is now owned by renowned Historic Rally competitor Steve Perez, and is restored its full Audi Sport works colours and FiA Historic Spec as per early '86.
