Cheers both. The car in finlo's picture looks like it could be right. I was pretty sure it was a Lancia but it's good to get other opinions.

It would be a shame if it's one of these.
It's not.

It's most probably something Japanese.

Looks like someone was converting a gt to gtr (ish).
Ride height at the front suggests sans engine.

On the edge of Charmouth Forest, been there a while, certainly a few months.

It's on SORN and MOT expired in October 2020.

It was last tested in October 2021 (at 166k miles) and achieved quite a failure list. Looks like rust is getting a hold on it.

It's also a diesel.

Do not drive until repaired (dangerous defects):
Offside Rear Wheel bearing play so excessive it is likely to break up (5.1.3 (a) (ii))
Repair immediately (major defects):
Nearside Front Headlamp not working on dipped beam (4.1.1 (a) (ii))
Offside Front Outer Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Offside Seat belt anchorage prescribed area strength or continuity significantly reduced inner and outer sill (7.1.1 (a) (i))
Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (6.1.2 (a))
Exhaust system insecure (6.1.2 (a))
Nearside Front Service brake excessively binding (1.2.1 (f))
Offside Front Service brake excessively binding (1.2.1 (f))
Nearside Rear Service brake excessively binding (1.2.1 (f))
Parking brake efficiency below requirements (1.4.2 (a) (i))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Nearside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
Nearside Rear Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
Offside Rear Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))

If its a 2003 then the wheels are wrong. Those are "starfish" alloys and they should be "Hoggars" but starfish are more attractive so are often swapped out by enthusiasts.

If the bumpers are intact then the car is worth salvaging. Peugeot coupe bumpers have all the structural strength of an airfix kit and getting unbroken replacements are well nigh impossible 20 years after they went out of production.

Ask me how I know... grumpy

I'll make the owner's club aware. There used to be quite a few owners down in Dorset who might be interested.

It's a Datsun of some kind, isn't it? The chrome trim round the lights seems to be part of the light fitting rather than the edge of the bodywork.

I've got it in the back of my mind that there was another car parked next to it last time I walked past, possibly another 406 coupe. The nearby cottage has two 2008 Citroen C5's parked outside, not abandoned, must be French car enthusiasts!

A lovely car and greenhouse combo near South Nutfield in Surrey today. A Lancia perhaps?
I think it's an Audi 100 S Coupe, like this one:

Zoom in closely and the mesh of the grille matches.

The sharp angles on the top corners of the Audi's windscreen don't appear to though.

You may be right, in which case it's the more common (although less so with twin headlights) Saloon:

If the panel at 45 deg to the front of the car is the bonnet, then it looks like some kind of clamshell like design which would rule out the Audi - that bonnet sits between the wing tops. I though that it was something like a mid 70s Toyota Corona but the details don't match around the headlights and grill. The proportions make it look like a smaller car - the headlights are large compared to the rest of the remains - the Audi headlights are much smaller relative to the windscreen.

Is that not the front wing with chrome wheel arch trim similar to the Audi pictured above?

Yes it is, and the front bumper has the indicator in the right place. This and the swage line on the top of the wing makes me think it is most likely an Audi.

I'd agree. Looks like Turbo Nana nailed it!

Even in that state it's probably worth saving for some of the spares – those things are rare as.

Only rich people had them where I grew up.

Same, and I always thought they had a simple, elegant lean-ness to them. I was given a lift in one once, as a youngster, and was struck how smooth and refined it felt (the bar was low: my dad had a Marina at the time...).
