I took a photo of that car summer 2024 in Elder street. It's certainly had a chunk of cash spent on its powertrain. Rest looked a bit pongy though.

If not, there's one in London that I've seen in Chelsea which looks in a very similar state of (superficial) disrepair that actually been EV'd.

I confess I prefer the fully restored, mint condition looks. However I can understand and respect someone wishing to maintain the original paintwork, even with such... Patina. That's probably more tricky than just having had it resprayed and washing as normal.

I like patina, but only because I'm too tight to pay for proper respray.

Yes that's what I read, didn't know he did Historics as well as more modern rallying.

From memory, that car was the subject of a Restoring classics episode of Bangers and cash. Once it was finished Dave Mathewson competed in an historic rally as part of the show before the car was auctioned off.

Superb-ish. It's a 2600, so will have the naff engine -- if memory serves, Leyland had to make the 2600 naff on purpose in order for it not to surpass the not-naff-but-by-then-horribly-dated 3500 engine, performance-wise. It wouldn't have done for the cheap one to be better than the flagship.

Even with the imposed naff, the 2600 put out 136 bhp (according to my book), so wasn't far off the V8 in any case. One assumes that a manual gearbox 2600 car could probably have kept pace with a V8 automatic; God knows which was heavier, though.

I think he only did one stage/selectif/test, not the whole rally.

I’ve found a somewhat local Jaguar graveyard … actually it’s a late 50s/60s estate where most of the parking spaces look to be taken up with Browns Lane’s finest. Also, there are random Jags in the adjoining streets - so part of the hoard I reckon.







The car the other side of the Jag’s front screen is a Rover 820 I think - but what’s the little red one to its right? It had TURBO on the back but couldn’t get a good look at the overall shape.

That looks like another 800 - a facelift saloon with the rounder profile on the rear door window. The burgundy one is a pre-facelift fastback.

Assuming the spolier has not been retro-fitted, the darker coloured one is a Vitesse (2.7 Honda), in Pearlescent Cherry Red, so 1989 or 1990.
