Super rare - only made for a year, 1990 - 1991. Unlike a few other cynical "soft roaders", this was a much more genuine effort - Synchro 4wd and chassis re-enforcements, some 500 additional parts specific to the car, built on in a dedicated Steyr plant in Graz. The extra kit, the manufacturing journey from Wolfsburg to Austria and back and the low volumes made them very expensive and they were based on the about-to-be-replaced mk2 so sold in tiny numbers. VW tried 2 tactics to shift them - first a cheaper stripped out steel wheeled, only-available-in-one-colour pov spec, then later in the run, fully leather lined, premium priced luxo "Chrome" model with the chrome bull bars.

Not rotting, but as with thousands of these perfectly functioning Japanese imports being broken for scrap in an industrial area in Sharjah, this was another one awaiting its tragically wasteful fate.
Nothing wrong with this car and more or less all of them that come here.
A waste of decent finite cars? Absolutely. Only the tip of the iceberg and sadly it's a lack of awareness that this is actually going on, or else I'm sure there'd be people besides themselves at this happening.
Was offered this one for the princely sum of £2,000.
Unfortunately I already have a Crown (2001 MY).
Same goes for this Mark II.
I returned a couple of hours after taking these photos to see its engine bay being gutted out.
Managed to buy an original Toyota radio/cassette and radio/cassette/CD for £8 each, and spotted these remnants from Ireland, too.
Nothing wrong with this car and more or less all of them that come here.
