A Ford spokesperson said, "We would urge readers to avoid speculating as to the cause of the incident, but we believe it may be connected to a failure in our prototype auto-dipping headlight mechanism".

I think the owner (or thief) called roadside assistance first with a problem.

Roadside Assistance: What do you think the problem is?

Customer: I think some water in the carburetor.

Roadside Assistance: Where exactly are you?

Customer: River Lagan in NI

In readiness for the launch of the MkIII Cortina, Ford's development engineers were set a series of challenges. The first was to drive from Dagenham with a full tank of petrol and ring head office when it ran out. With an adventurous spirit, they got as far as Northern Ireland before the Cortina ran dry. After locating a phone box they rang head office for instructions. Next task? Refuel the car and drive it as slowly as possible up the nearest steep hill, repeating the exercise until the clutch fails. Once that happened they rang head office again for their next task. This was to prove the car's rust-proofing, for which they had to park the Cortina in a damp location for as long as possible, and look for signs of corrosion.

Unfortunately at this point, the team of engineers became rather bored of their task and decided to park the car near the River Lagan and retire to the pub. Believing they had completed their final challenge, celebrations were comprehensive and they forgot where they left the car. Sadly that night there was a terrible storm, and a month's worth of rain fell in just a few hours.

Once the rain had stopped, and their hangovers wore off, the engineers finally admitted that they'd lost the Cortina forever.

The long, hot summer of 2026 and the drought conditions it brought with it, finally revealed the Cortina's resting place of 57 years earlier. Ford were keen to recover the car and conduct a belated lessons learned exercise to help explain how their cars of the seventies and eighties developed such a shocking reputation for rust.

A VR6 as well MoT ran out a dozen years ago. Looked relatively solid though.

One from the last year in production. I'd knock on the door if I knew where that was. Already been through the horror show of ownership unpredictability with regard to '' what's going to break today '' way back when I had mine, and time's a great healer!
one of the rarer VR6 Storm models? which were indeed late run outs. And only in that colour and 'Classic Green'.
Another shout out for one of best handling cars I've had, was a '94 VR6. and then followed it with a '95 Green Storm with cream leather.

Good spot. And one for another thread. One a big, brutish 4 seater GT car, one a big V12 powered GT car...

...and the third is a Mini

The green Corrado caught my eye. So I did some online Sherlockery K956ERP VW Corrado 2.0

Last passed an MOT in 2015 (but doesn't appear to have been put tested in 2016 just parked up). It failed first attempt in 2015 with a pretty extensive list of problems but none that sounded like a potential death knell. To whit:

Parking brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7) FAIL
Exhaust catalytic converter missing where one was fitted as standard (7.1.3) FAIL
Exhaust noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition (7.1.4) FAIL
Nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort (3.7.B.6a) FAIL
Nearside Rear Tyre has ply or cords exposed (4.1.D.1b) FAIL
Nearside Headlamp not working on dipped beam (1.7.5a) FAIL
Offside Headlamp not working on dipped beam (1.7.5a) FAIL
Nearside Front Brake hose excessively chafed (3.6.B.4d) FAIL
Nearside Front Shock absorber has a serious fluid leak (2.7.3) FAIL
Nearside Rear wheel bearing has slight play (2.6.2) ADVISORY
Offside Front constant velocity joint gaiter deteriorated to the extent that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc (2.5.C.1a) FAIL
Offside Front Subframe mounting prescribed area is fractured (2.4.A.3) FAIL
Rear Brake pad(s) wearing thin (3.5.1g) ADVISORY
rear brake discs corroded ADVISORY
offside wiper rubber splitting ADVISORY

In the previous year it had covered an impressive 42k miles! Final recorded mileage 169k (so might be over 200k if the usage in the following year was similar)

Marvin Gaye, apparently. Custom build in the Superfly style -- appears to have been stretched; E-Body car, so front wheel drive and (I think) no separate chassis. God knows how it would drive. In a bendy fashion, possibly.

Here is the car in happier times:
