Car tax for 8 or 9 months?
Discussion
I have an idea that could make life easier for those of us who don't use our cars in the winter and could save the DVLA money, but I have found it impossible to speak to anyone at the DVLA who can do anything about it. I spoke to someone there who suggested the gov.uk website, but I couldn’t find anywhere on that website where I could make a suggestion. Perhaps the government doesn’t want to receive suggestions from the general public, but if that isn’t correct, there is no obvious way to go about it other than via one’s MP, so that is what I have done
My suggestion is, I hope, relatively simple. The only current options for car tax are 12 or 6 months, so I, again like many, tax my car for 12 months, then declare a SORN and DVLA sends me a cheque for the balance. Now that there is no tax disc and everything is done electronically, it seems to me that it would be a simple task for the DVLA to offer tax for say 8 or 9 months (8 would probably suit many people, but 9 would get the DVLA more money) and then there would be no need for a SORN and no need for the DVLA to send cheques out.
A good idea?

Classic cars are tax exempt and then you are left with a small number of yesterdays heroes which simply wouldn't justify the investment needed to change the DVLA systems.
This is a little amusing really.........you can tax a vehicle for as long as 12 months or 6 months if you wish to pay upfront, or you can tax for as short a period as you wish as indicated already, by signing up to direct debit which only has a 5% admin fee rather than the six month 10%, and sorn the vehicle at will, then you will often be refunded an unused month. It is simply brilliant and I have been doing this since inception of the new system, and have to say it is faultless. I have 12 vehicles all of which are taxed at random. You just haven't done it, it isn't that they don't offer it. Please don't give them any reason to change it again. The idea I can use a car for a month for £25 is such a relief when I don't have to go anywhere to do it or wait for cheques when cashing in. Just click the right option and trust!
I just keep mine taxed all year. The cost of doing this is a tiny proportion of the overall price of running the car and there's always going to be that odd sunny January morning where a cathartic blast around the Brecon Beacons reminds me what a fantastic car a transaxle Alfa Romeo is.

This!It works brilliantly, and if you cancel at the end of the month and DVLA take the money by DD, it's usually refunded within 2 weeks.
I sold one car on 30th March and sorned one on 3st March and DVLA still took the payment on 1st April, which I would expect.
The payments were refunded direct to my bank account on 12th April, all done online with no letters sent or received and no cheques sent out.

if its can be done on-line why does it need to be from the 1st of the month it could be done day of the month and Sorned any day how hard is it to calculate a refund .
Because the entire VED system is set up based on months, not on days. February is the same "price" as a 31-day month. To base it on days instead of months was not only utterly unnecessary prior to the removal of the paper disks (and nobody complained), but would involve complete redevelopment of the systems. MILLIONS of pounds. It's simple put the tax on fuel ,the more you use the more you pay .
I don't mind losing free tax on older vehicles as the additional cost of the fuel is negligible due to most of these cars doing low annual mileages.
It would stop this farce of low tax band vehicles doing huge mileages .
It's also guaranteed income ,you have to put fuel in to use them .
Charge the electric lot extra just for being smug gits !

In case anyone is concerned, my MP forwarded my suggestion to the Department of Transport which responded several months later by telling me what the current system is without any acknowledgment of my suggestion. Civil servants apparently do not like change. Anyway, I have taken the advice of those above and have taxed my car by DD and will cancel it when the frosts come.
