What the hell is THAT still doing on the road??

Next to me at a petrol station this morning was a Mk1 Escort. A very nice example, which had clearly been absolutely loved and cherished, appeared to have had various performance enhancements made to it, looked better than I expect it did leaving the factory. That, to me, is the epitome of the once common, now rare car sighting.
We then pulled out of the petrol station and went past a mauve A reg Triumph Acclaim which looked like it's being used as a daily driver for an odd job man!
This was a hideous car when it was new, so who in their right minds is still running one 33 years later???
Anyone else seen anything recently and wondered what on earth it was doing still being driven around today? I reckon that Acclaim had photos of its owner shagging a goat or something!

There is a guy around the area where I work who seems to use his shagged Sierra Sapphire as a daily, if a panel isn't wrecked it is a different colour.
I work opposite a Shell garage and see the car frequently in there, he only seems to put a splash of petrol in it and he'll be back in a couple of days, we joke that he doesn't want to put anymore than a fiver in it as the day he brims it will be the day that it finally conks out and in the tank will be £50 of wasted petrol, he just doesn't want to risk it.

At the other end of the scale, a neighbour's son is storing a T reg focus in her garage and has been for some time. He comes round and pulls it out of the garage every so often and then puts it away again. I think he's waiting for his 80s nissan bluebird to finally die before swapping over to the focus.
It's easy to judge a book by its cover. Maybe the Acclaim driver has owned the car for a considerable length of time and is attached to it. Maybe it fulfils his motoring requirements. Maybe it's mechanically well-maintained despite appearances.
Probably he owns it outright which in itself is admirable these days.
The fact it got noticed and generated a PH post proves it's an interesting car, whether you like the car or not.

Was the Acclaim realky that bad, or is it the usual 'Clarkson said it was terrible when he did Motorworld in 1999 so it mst be awful' bandwagon getting a good jumping?
I remember it as quite nippy for what it was with the twin carbs and that little Honda E code engine that revved like a sewing machine, frugal on fuel if you drove it sensibly and actually reliable on a cold morning.
I guess we had a good one.

MOT exemption is pre-1960.I genuinely have no idea how it gets through every year then, half of the rear wheel arches are rusted away, I suppose the old body on frames are somewhat easier to keep repaired. .
