Are there any "classic" cars where the later versions are now worth more than the early versions?

Healey 3000, although the margin has narrowed considerably between the early and late cars. The early cars being much prettier, the later cars being easier to live with (wind up windows, better dash, better hood etc).

If something as new as an XJ-S/XJS is included in your definition of a classic car then I suspect they'd do it. Try looking at the price of a late convertible especially the run out V12s.

Integrale- and other things that got incrementally better with little or no downside over earlier versions.

Lotus Elan and Europa

Lamborghini Miura

Bentley Turbo R

Mercedes SL R107 and maybe W129

Porsche 944

Many of these had long lives, so were improved and developed over the years, possible with better corrosion protection too (like the XJ-S, although the rare early manuals are worth more than any other model).

Thanks. I think the Integrale and 944 are perhaps good examples of cars that simply got better over time. Though perhaps there's a time issue since they are not that old. In another 20 years?

The Elan/Europa and Miura are nice examples. Am I correct in thinking that they really buck the trend for pre-80s cars? If so, why is that?

Honda NSX - the facelift NA2's are worth more than the original cars.

In Germany, the '67+ mustangs are more valuable than the '65/66 possibly due to the bullit association of the later cars? yet in the UK '65/66 are more desirable as the 'original' shape.

Maybe, but the very first pre-HE cars are worth fair bit now, good manual gearbox ones are well over £20k.

I suppose that many "run-out" models are worth more. For example I have always loved the Golf GTi Campaign model over the earlier one I had, but by then I had moved on to other cars.

Late RR type 20valve Quattros consistently more valuable than early cars, although early four-headlamp lhd cars probably now catching up.

A top-nick 80s disk brake 2cv is worth more than a similarly good 50s ripple, easily.

Nice example of an older car. To go along with the Miura and Lotus examples. I completely get the point made by other posts giving examples of newer cars where newer just seems to be plain "better".
