A few years ago my parents bought me his for my 32nd birthday. Over a few years I’ve restored the car and thought I should really show it on here. Especially as it looks like I’m about to embark upon a Capri mk3 restoration!

So the car is a 1990 1.6XR2i 8 valve with 74k on the clock. It is in fantastic condition, unmarked interior, great wheels and excellent bodywork. It has a tiny bit of superficial surface rust on the drivers door and near the fuel cap, but I will be getting this sorted as a priority.

The engine bay just needs a clean....can't wait to get the steam cleaner out:

Keep checking back for more updates

I hadn’t planned on doing much to it, but first up was a full service and sorting out one of my workshops to put it in. I also loved my XR3I out into my other store to make way:

Bearing in mind I am not a qualified mechanic and everything I know is self taught, what I was about to embark upon was probably a bit of a risk:

Decided to take the engine out to aid with cleaning the bay:

Front in we arches showed signs of surface corrosion so this was all dealt with:

Arches stone chipped with white and then painted in the correct shade of Ford white:

Decided at this point to replace the following:

Brakes all round
Handbrake cable
Shocks and springs
Oil sump
Clutch
CV joints
Wheel bearings
All filters etc

Rear shocks and waxoiled rear arches:

Whilst the engine was out I thought I might as well repaint the bay, although most of it is actually hidden by the engine once refitted:

To get it to this stage was really satisfying after all of the cleaning. Painted and lacquered with 2k:

I need help from a mate to put the engine back in with a new clutch etc, but our offshore rotas didn’t match up so I waited a few months and did other jobs.

Original parcel shelf had survived without being butchered for speakers:

The big day. Engine reinstalled and restarted first time...apart from a small fuel leak from the rail where I’d mispositioned a tiny seal:

Cosmetic body work time. Fortunately there was no rust as the arches had been replaced previously. There were tiny bubbles in the paint from moisture in the air when it was last painted in 2008. The drivers door was removed to reseal the weld between the outer and inner panel to prevent any further water. I had a NOS door but didn’t need to use it as the repair was fairly easy.

The car is now very much up to show standard and must be one of the best XR2I left on the road. She shows every year at Stokesley Classics on Show next to some of my other Fords:
