Hi all, I finally signed up after years of lurking.

I couldnt find a designated insurance section here so apologies if it doesnt belong.

Basically I am Irish, living in Switzerland for 5 years.

In Ireland my parents house was in the country with a big drive for detailing and car maintenance, here in Switzerland we are in an apartment in the city with no garage or parking and, well swiss laws and mentality with regard to car washing and DIY.

So (getting to the point) I have been looking forward to the day my missus finishes her PhD and we move to the UK where I can once again have space for car stuff.

My issue now is, I have put in my details into several online insurance sites, and the quotes I am getting are between 2-3k on something like an R56 Cooper S, or Gold GTI, Im guessing due to my Swiss license and the fact that none of my NCB is taken (drove for 5 years in Ireland and 5 year without accident).

Does anyone perhaps have any experience or recommendations of insurance companies who do/might be more accepting to foreign licenses/NCB?

Im 27yo male btw.

Many thanks!

If you haven't had a car for 5 yrs, your ncb is too old to be counted, regardless of it being uK or foreign.

So you're 27, taking out insurance on a hot hatch with, in effect, no previous history. That's going to be pricey regardless.

Were you a named driver on the policy you were driving here under? If so, some companies will give some discount based on the time you have been a named driver on the policy.

If you have been a named driver on a policy then whoever provided that policy are worth talking to.

I was driving in Ireland the first year as a named driver, the other 4 years on my own policy. Then moved to Switzerland, bought a car after 6months and have been driving since under my own policy.

Rather than doing it online. I would speak to brokers and insurance companies direct to see if they can take into account your driving history.

I will closer to the time (we'll be here a few months yet but was starting to browse pistonheads) , was just wondering if someone here had direct experience of it or if it would be a no-go regardless.

Aviva are usually quite relaxed about European NCB and licences.

My broker (A Plan) were able to find an underwriter who were happy with Foreign NCB a few years ago. Markerstudy I think was the underwriter.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I ran a few test quotes through Aviva this morning and got many reasonable quotes, it seems they even give an extra discount if your NCD was earned abroad!

Make sure you keep documentary evidence of the NCD. (eg a renewal quote).

Recently (but anecdotally only) Ive seen more insurers ask for this after signing up with them. They then raise the premium if not evidenced.
