I’d forget the tax exemption, much more restrictive. And pretty much any 40+ year old car at your budget, if used every day, will quickly become a major money pit. The longevity of many of them was rubbish even when they were new!

Try a wanted ad on the scimitarweb forum. You don't have to be a club member to join. You might twist the arm of someone thinking about selling but who had not go around to getting an ad up - put your location.

Scimitar owners club is a great club. Great knowledge, friendly members, spares support, good magazine - everything you could possibly hope for in a car club.

I don’t think the Scimitar is a good car for a Lab - getting in would involve jumping in through the rear window. The access to the rear is very limited, with a high lip. You need a proper estate. Audi S2 would be good, if you can find a good one.

Agreed. I had a scimitar and a young retriever and it was not comfortable for him.

In the end I bought a BMW E30 Touring which was perfect.

Not tax exempt, and some may say not yet a classic, but how about a mk3 Golf VR6?

Low(ish) loading lip for the dog, quite reliable and values rising for tidy ones.

Renault 4 is a good option but getting a good Renault 4 in the UK is harder than finding a needle in a haystack i'm afraid and the few that come up for sale are either in showroom state and very pricey or absolute rust buckets!
