SAAB 99/900?
A 99 combi coupe yes, great choice, but these days, it will be next to impossible to find a good one in the OP's budget I'm afraid. And a Saab 900 would be a great choice, although doesn't fall into the tax exempt bracket yet, the earliest ones being 1979/80, so not far away though.

Volvo Amazon wagon?
And another for this. I ran a delightfully scruffy Amazon 222s with o/d, went everywhere in the outside lane at 90mph with more to spare and terrorised reps due to its battleship grey exterior and general aura of disregard. A decent 145 is also good shout. Had both w123 and w124 mercs, easily take daily use. Dunno tax exempt rules now but early 245 Volvo's are in the up...or a 2.8 ghia X Granada, ran one of them too, schmoozetastic I had a Scimitar, great fun, great drive, however very temperamental, a factory built kit car if you would.
Couldn't face it as an every day.
I think you need to define what you mean as classic.
I drive an 04 plate Rover 75 now.
It has wood, leather, getting rarer, nice drive and for £10 a year I'm in an active club who hold regular events.
It's also modern, safe and easy to drive.

Don't dismiss relatively modern, over old, I've owned all sorts of classics, the Rover is MUCH better than them all, including a TVR, Audi 80, Scimitar, Land Rover 2A, Volvo 240 GLT and so on....FOR AN EVERYDAY CAR - please be careful.

Hell, yeah!
2.8 Granada estates are like hens teeth in good condition. There is a pimped up one on Ebay that looks bloody awful.I had a 2.8 Ghia back in the 80s and it was a great car, but later I had a 2.8i Scorpio that was even better and had every gadget imaginable!
I haven't looked, but might a MK3 Granada estate fall within budget?
