What you mean is you have to be careful buying an old Ford, regardless of where it comes from.
If you can trust the seller and have at least a little knowledge in looking at cars then you would spot at least some of that before buying.
I have the knowledge and I trust the seller FYI it is the same seller who is selling the RS2000 the OP has linked to. If you can trust the seller and have at least a little knowledge in looking at cars then you would spot at least some of that before buying.
But how do you spot
Nuts not done up tight ?
Heater matrix split ?
Flywheel that was not tight and came loose after your first drive when you got it home
Late model GM seats welded to the runners ?
Servo Booster diaphragm split ? (just thought the brakes were old on test drive)
That the paint would blister over the next 12 months
The rust on the floor was very very well hidden, unless you took a sander to the area you would see it but you would have to know where to sand to find it.
How I found it was when I took out the carpet that had been glued down to replace it with an original ford on by chance there was a inspection light laying garage floor and you could see it shining though the fiberglass that has been put on the inside of the car and covered over with glue and carpet.
Like I said these cars had a hard life, I am dealing with bodges / just bad mechanics

20 grand and he can't even be bothered to change the oil and chuck a £15 cam belt on it? I can't comprehend spending that much on an Escort and that's coming from someone that RS was untouchable 25 years ago.
They were great at what they did but you can get a proper car for that money.
I agree, if you are spending 20k, the least you would expect is a service before collection. It would cost him peanuts but give any buyer an extra degree of assuranceThey were great at what they did but you can get a proper car for that money.
My old man had a late RS Custom unregistered in his garage until his Venetian red one died of old age. He eventually registered it on a x plate.
He also had one of the first pre production MK 1 Escort Twin Cams back in the day. James Allen - the F1 bloke’s dad, Bill Allen, arranged it for him.
Brand new cost was just over £1,100, bargain!

As the car was first registered in this country in July 1980
One of the very last ones then if so. There was only a handful left unregistered, unsold by the middle of Aug 1980.A lot of friends owned them too ( couple still have them as well )
This was a late reg car - Sept 80 - still lives
Another friend owned an X reg one too - would rather have had his earlier reg RS1800 though as one to hang onto
No faster than the Pinto but worth a lot more than an RS2000 now!

Ooh I do like RS2000s! (even if that isn't necessarily a great example).
It was actually a very nice example.Admittedly the scanned photo quality wasn’t great but it looks better in this angle maybe? It still lives on but is on SORN currently
A lot of us used to run the clear Perspex headcovers to save the expensive headlights from stone chips
2 screws held the bezel surrounds on each side so it was 30 seconds work to remove them at night ( although the lights worked fine with them on )
Does anyone recall seeing an RS2000 MK2 in that very dark blue ? There were many RS2s floating around East London / Essex in the early to mid 80s, but I only ever recall seeing one dk blue example, it was a V reg and owned by a pal
of a Late friend. I had a quick tear up with it one day in my tired engined 150hp TR6, near the Epping Forest country club. This one had the dark chocolate Recaros in it. I think he sadly wrote it off a short time later.
Another well known Turbo RS2, was also written off, in a sadly fatal crash in Chingford.

Hard to make out but this is a 1988 Irish (Limerick) registered MK2. Well known on the scene and is well driven too.
The Irish have an obsession for obscure back roads and RWD Escorts; it's one of the better religions.s m said:

Also, random picture of one my dad took whilst out working before he retired, probably late 90s. Seem to remember him saying it was South coast somewhere, maybe Southampton.

Yes I think it lived Southampton, Hamble and Fareham area for years (80's and 90's) and used to see it about occasionally. Came up for sale in the late 90's and a mate nearly bought it but it was a bit too far gone, prices were pretty rock bottom then.Still miss my Venetian Red RS2 Custom nearly 30 years after selling it although sadly XOC 96T was stolen from the next owner and never resurfaced. Always wanted a Signal Orange one but they were rare even back in the late 80's, really suited the car and a great 70's colour.

Yeah, same with me regarding Vista Orange on the AVO Mk1's, which was one of the rarest colours. After my factory black car had to be scrapped, I then spent 9-12 months travelling all around the country looking for a Vista orange car, eventually finding one, only for it to be stolen 4 weeks after buying it...... Such was the joy of fast Ford ownership in the mid-1980's.
