I usually like this sort of thing. "Real story", disaster etc. But watching that trailer it just seems a bit too ... bleak.

Anybody know any more about it the series?

It's a 5 part mini series, begins to air on May 6th I believe. Other than that I don't know much, except that the trailer looks suitably bleak.

So did anybody else watch the first episode?
I found it suitably bleak, with that suspenseful feeling of dread running throughout. Locations and cast look authentic, with strong acting. The human element is to the forefront of the storytelling.
One thing I did notice was not one Ukrainian or Russian accent throughout. All the actors are strong, but a mix of various European, UK, Irish, and US accents stood out. Better than faking a Ukrainian or Russian accent, but there are strong actors from eastern Europe and Russia too.
Still, that's a very minor grumble which I'm sure the intended western audiences won't even notice.

No spoilers please!

I’m definitely going to watch this, it looked pretty good from the advert.

Not sure whether to watch or not.

My wife wants to, but has banned me from watching it with her!

American friend who also worked there, but for longer than me, commented that the Ignalina site they used for filming appears uncannily similar to the actual thing.

She’s worried you’ll point out bits that aren’t right all the time? hehe

Just watched it. The thing that grates more than anything is the constant denial from everyone above the social standing of ordinary joe that the accident was serious. From plant management to local political officers it was just a fire, it was all under control and what everyone actually witnessed didn’t happen because it couldn’t happen therefore they were mistaken in what they saw.

So instead of trying to tackle an impossible situation you just find yourself telling everyone to get as far away as possible as quickly as possible. Looking forward to seeing the remaining episodes while at the same time wondering how such a situation would be handled nowadays, especially if it was in a non-western country.

I recently watched two very good documentaries on this, on YouTube I’ll try and find them.

They went more into detail on the accident.
I’m not sure this programme can be taken at face value, I’m sure there is a bit of an exaggeration here for dramatic effect.
Or maybe not. Who knows I’m just wary of assuming anything like this to be 100%

This is one. It’s very good. Goes into the personalities of the guys there and the man running the test. The party politics etc as well, however once it blew they all knew how bad.

That’s definitely annoying. Maybe afterwards it’s interesting (for some) to compare the film or tv show with the reality but someone saying “that’s wrong” whilst you’re trying to enjoy a story is just annoying. hehe

Maybe after it’s done, we could compare it with the truth on here though? It would be great to have some expert input on this thread.

Please do - just remember to hide it behind spoiler quotes for the strange people who can't just not click on a thread if they don't want to see people discussing something they're watching.

My problem is when the 'wrong' annoys me and makes it more difficult for me to enjoy the story. I might have to watch it now!

My one comment even before seeing it about the 'how could they be that bad at knowing what was going on?'.... because they were really that bad at it!

you're perfectly safe here - I won't post anything other than responses or in sync with the series (although because I was looking for something recently I reminded myself I have a far better collection of photos than I remember scavenging before I left!), it is my poor wife that would be suffering me getting frustrated with how things are portrayed!

I take it we have an expert on the board. llewop have you seen the zero hour doc I linked above.
If so how accurate is it, seems very well researched.

I hadn't, but just watched it. It seemed okay - can't really comment on the accuracy of the operational differences of opinion in the control room, the issues with the reactor itself and lack of training/understanding of its quirks was there. The fisherman side-story seemed odd and unnecessary. Looking at the official data they do not appear to be amongst the deaths, if their doses according to wiki are about right (somewhere in the region of LD50) then that is almost surprising.

I would imagine the new series will be similar but with more time to develop the identities and perhaps more of the aftermath which seemed a bit rushed.

To clarify the 'expert on board' {my expertise is in radiation safety, not reactor operation, so whilst I have done courses on reactors, operating them is not my specific knowledge. Been doing it over 30 years so would like to think I have got the hang of it by now. I spent 4+ years working at Chernobyl on the New Safe Confinement project, which has just completed final commissioning}.

Sorry but I am going to have to spoil it.

The reactor catches fire, there is a bloody Big Bang and lots of destruction.

I'm not sure there's that much physical destruction really. Just the worst thing destroyed.

I just finished episode 1. My stomach hurts and I have a background sense of dread. The OH thinks it's great though.
