Perhaps the owner was based at the RAF Dawes Hill which was used mainly by the US Military ?

I've no idea what was under the tarp. However, he's wearing a 'cardigan' not a silk smoking jacket! smile

No it's not, but it is an Austin 7 Special. 'Very special!'
The engine had only been launched the year prior and it didn't sit up front.
I can't think, well I don't have to think, of anyone else who ever attempted this.
There were other tuners who jumped at tuning this particular new engine, but nobody ever suggested nor thought of putting it 'up front'.

He then went on to build a prototype sports car in the front room of his semi detached, where he lived with his mum and a couple of guys who rented as a bedsit.
Mum was told to move upstairs as were his friends moved to other rooms - why?
So the front room could be his makeshift 'garage'.
When built the idea was to demolish the front bay window and wall and 'drive the car out!' then rebuild the frontage.
In the end this didn't happen, the 'car' was manhandled on to its side and got through the front door, and finished off outside under a shelter.
The house was No. 22 Chinbrook Road, Grove Pk, London. Wonder if who lives there now realises it was the birthplace of a new sports car company?

Any wiser?

Hazard a guess at it being a Coventry Climax from an Imp, I thought the car maker is Lotus but 1964 is too late.

Crikey, that picture struck a chord. My first car was a blue R5 TL, HLY 111N. I used to drive around there (well, around everywhere really) and thought that was me when I first saw it.

Actually, on closer inspection, that car has much smarter seats than my no-headrest cheapies had.

My history master at school had an absolute billy basic left hand drive 5 imported from France - first gen. Still had the yellow headlight bulbs. I remember it had the side exit exhaust and dash mounted gearlever a la 2CV like this one which made it a pre '73
