So, after many hard, prolonged poundings (or perhaps just based on its age), we need to replace our mattress.
Not a clue where to start.
Are these super-wonderful-magic 100-night-trial £1k mail order jobbers seen on TV actually as good as they claim?
Or do I just throw £199 at IKEA?

Recently we went to Dreams. It had a mattress hooked up to a computer to tell us what mattresses we need, soft/firm/hard etc. We ended up buying one from there for £999 (king size), based on their recommendation and it's lovely. My back stopped hurting pretty quickly after the swap. Delivery was a few weeks. Even offered the 100 day trial, could swap to any other mattress the same price within that time.

Personally I'd avoid any foam based product, they retain heat and I can't get comfortable on them. Most of the online/TV ones are foam.

Where to start is simple:

https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/

a company that builds mattresses in the UK - but more than that they are passionate about mattresses - spend some time reading their website it is stuffed full of information...

we looked at John Lewis - but ended up buying a John Ryan mattress:
- we paid c. £3k for mattress (super king zip and link) / bed / headboard - at John Lewis - the same cost would have only bought the mattress not the bed as well
- John Lewis give no ability to test the bed - and you really need at least a month in the bed to know if it is right for you - you buy it and tough if you get it wrong... at John Ryan, you have 60 days and it is a no quibble conversation if you don't like it / need to change it

I was also very impressed by the fact that they had long conversations with us about what we wanted etc. - and when we placed an order online, they rang us to check that we were definitely buying the right mattress...

very pleased so far (we are one month in!) and it is beautifully made and very comfortable...

but even if you don't go with them - read their website

We have a Simba and it's the comfiest mattress I've ever found. My wife has a very bad back, and it was significantly reduced by this.

We also had an issue with some of the internal elements moving around when we moved house last year, matress was over 2 years old by then, and they replaced it with a brand new one no quibbles at all. Collected the old one and delivered the new, the courier even carried it upstairs.

I've got a John Ryan mattress. It's a seriously solid bit of kit and i love it... When I was ordering it they asked about my weight, my OHs weight, how we sleep etc. I said i wanted firm and they made a recommendation. I went up one more level of firm and they said i'd probably find it too firm.

We've had it about 2.5 years now, and do you know what? They were right. It is too firm. I'll never admit it to the OH though, who keeps moaning that we should get a softer mattress.

I'll probably replace it early (with another) and throw this one to the replace the one in the spare room - but not yet.

Ditto, our Simba is brilliant. Tried lots of beds across multiple stores (a variety of the new foam/hybrid ones, and traditional spring mattresses).

It is about 2-3x the price of the Ikea mattress, but still a moderately priced mattress compared to the £2-3k hand made ones.

Having said that, the Simba was chosen because of how it worked for us rather than cost (whilst the other pure foam ones were just too soft for us).

I spent £1500 (discounted!) at John Lewis - don't skimp if you have a bad back!!!

Foam ones are awful.

Just bought a Hypnos Swinton Superking & a Dreams Deacon bed. Finishing some renovation works at the moment so haven't tried it out yet but fingers crossed it was money well spent.

I bought an EMMA and it's absolutely superb.

I've only had it 2 months now, but it just feels amazing. I also had it during the hottest days and didn't really have any issue with being too hot.

Yep another vote for Hypnos. We loved ours so much we bought another three for the other bedrooms. You can get the same ones that they have in the Premier Inn from - https://www.premierinnbed.co.uk/ Cheaper than JL but not sure they are the same spec....

You really think Her Maj sleeps on a Premier Inn mattresss?
The company has a royal warrant, that means they supply products to the royal household - not that the Queen sleeps on the same mattress you can buy down the road - particularly as they've had the royal warrant since 1929, and I doubt they were knocking out mattresses for the Premier Inn then either...

So Mrs CFK is quite taken by the idea of a Premier Inn bed having road tested a few.
Only a couple of mentions so far though.

We looked at them - based on comfortable nights at Premier Inn - but came to the conclusion that long term they were not the best purchase...
One of the issues with the pillow top is that you can't turn the mattress (squashes the pillow top) which apparently shortens lifetime - and found a lot of reviews / comments on forums saying that the pillow top went flat in a few years...

I also quite liked the idea of a mattress made from natural materials and in the UK...
