God looking car and exciting project. Wheels look especially purposeful.

Great stuff - as you've teased us with a pic of the front end only, I'll guess it's a GT rather than an Invader, with the B Series engine, and not the Essex etc?? Either way I imagine the mechanicals will be quite sturdy once you've de-bugged it. Enjoy it! thumbup

There's going to be a bit of that....

I had it delivered from Cambridge to a Chum in Portsmouth, plan was to drive it to the ferry, then drive it across the Isle of Wight to my home.

The 6 miles to the ferry went fine, buoyed with success i took a photo and posted it on the Gilbern Club facebook page

As soon as I pulled off the ferry, it started to misfire...then came to a standstill, 15 mins later it stated, got me a couple of miles further, then another 15 mins rest and I made it home on 3 cylinders. Its just condensor, coil, plugs, old fuel crap. Think timing is out by a mile.

Huge clonk from the rear when switching off the overdrive! Perhaps a hub spline.

Feels a bit out of balance, Lots of lead on the rims.

Riot to drive.

Facet red top is noisy.

Nice nice!

A Garage in Stafford had an Invader in for some time, where I bought a Renault 11 Turbo.

They all do that sir...

I had a solid state pump on my mini, bolted direct to the rear bulkhead. Drove me nuts until I remounted it elsewhere on rubber.
Have a similar one on my Caterham, but it's drowned out by the exhaust and webers!

Sorry to side-track, but that looks fantastic.
Doesn't it just.

Loved the look of the Series 3, thought the earlier models a little "bland" BUT looking at yours I can now see the attraction. Can't get away with the estate under any circumstances though. Like the BMW 2002 of which I had a tii and loved it, the Touring version just looks wrong, but I digress. Good luck with your project.

Exciting news, my Idiot Certificate arrived in the post, along with an electronic ignition and a new Lucas gold HT coil.

As I posted, the drive home was less than a success, misfiring most of the way and coming to a stop twice, this morning I whipped out the dizzy to install the powerspark electronic doofer and found this....

Look carefully at the white wire, halfway along it had been touching the dizzy shaft, insulation worn through, that'll be the misfire then!

Running vastly better, next job is to get the strobe light I bought for £6 in about 1990 fired up!

I had forgotten that if I run a car in the garage, without shutting the garage door or the utility door, or both, that the bloody CO alarm by the boiler in the pantry goes off, as it is doing right now!

One of those gratifying moments when a problem is easy to diagnose, inexpensive and simple to remedy - make the most of it smile

I'm planning on daily driving this if I ever finish it, should be plenty of fun around London, totally impractical.

Don't know how to rotate the picture sorry!

Finished fitting the alternator, now charging at 14 volts, warning light on dash functioning correctly. Nice.

Fiddled about a bit more, added a terminal to the coil, so now have the tacho working. I tried to set up the timing, dig out my strobe light, had a look, but I could not see the mark, so I had a bit of a clean up on the crank pulley and painted on a new mark (Internation Toplac yacht enamel in snow white, couldn't find tippex!)

Reckon we are very close to some test drives.

You can run anything you want. Literally anything is possible. My friend’s BiL ran a 1964 Bentley S3 as his work car ffs!

But you’ve got to have a plan. You will need something on standby, you will need a mechanic who knows the cars and you will have to accept putting your hand in your pocket.

I frequently use my 1983 Sierra for work. The truth is YES - my father did the same through the 80s. But his didn’t leak, didn’t mist up, had a functioning heater and wasn’t surrounded by cars 2,3,4 times more powerful.

You’ll be fine, but be realistic. It’s not a barrel of laughs!

My plan to use my 1989 Toyota MR2 as my Xmas car was foiled by my fkwitted brother, who left the car parked outside the bone dry barn that I rent for my old heaps, for several rainy weeks. Thus the car is now waterlogged, has mouldy carpets, and the battery connectors have corroded away. My Morris Sherpa campervan and my Series 3 Land Rover are both working, but are toooo slow and badly heated for Xmas visits up and down the blighted isle. My classic Moto Morini 350S motorbike is working, but winter is TOO COLD AND SCARY for biking.

I am, however, going to see a mystery vehicle either tomorrow or next weekend, which could become my new classic daily driver (all my other heaps would then be sold).

I am staying schtum, and not even TORTURE* will make me reveal the nature of my target.

* Michael Buble Xmas Album might do it.

I’d love to use one of my classics through the winter but I just can’t bring myself to ruin it. All that salt and stuff. I saw a S1 Etype Coupe on the motorway recently properly dirty as if in period. Looked so refreshingly great.

So Ive bought a traditional Plus 8 Morgan and that’s my intention. I wanted to buy a ratty tatty example but the price spread between all the years and mileages was negligible so I’ve ended up with a 10k miler. Now I’m hesitating

Bold = nice turn of phrase ...

I agree, these modern things are just so big and high nowadays. I swear the 944’s roof is the same height as the bonnet on these Range Rover / Evoque monstrosities ...

Bodge powers and swearing have rendered my MR 2 mobile, and I have run it for a bit with the heater blasting to dry out the interior. So, yay!

This shed might be going to see another shed tomorrow. Allegedly. Maybe. Perhaps. I'm not saying.
