Jim Clark Museum - accommodation?

Hi,

Posted in yesterday’s heroes, but cuprabob suggested here may be better (doh!)........

Has anyone stayed overnight whilst visiting the Museum?

Where would you recommend?

Just spent 30 minutes trawling trip advisor and lost the will to live!!

I'd probably choose somewhere like Kelso or Berwick Upon Tweed. A short drive and you'll have stuff to do.

There will be a few Airbnb options too.

The biggest town closest to Duns is Kelso in the borders. It's the best place to stay as Duns doesn't really have any worthwhile places. Yes, you can go to Berwick, but Kelso is a much nicer town. There's the Cross Keys, Ednam House or Queens Head amongst other B&Bs.

There's no chain-type hotels in the whole borders apart from Best Western at Selkirk - a bit away from Duns. Berwick has a Travelodge if you want it on a budget!

Another worthwhile one is Buccleuch Hotel St Boswells a couple miles south of Melrose.

Best places on the coast are Coldingham and St Abbs

I've not stayed there, but a friend who went to the opening of the museum stayed in the Allanton Inn in Duns. My recollection is that it was all good.

After the museum have a visit to Stobs Camp near Hawick, Charterhall and Winfield where Jim honed his craft; his memorial stone in Chirnside and his grave in Chirnside churchyard; and the former family home at Edington Mains farm. I think the former McBain's garage is still visible in Chirnside, where the Border Reivers team was based. If you've got time (it's a two-hour drive), nip up to Fife and see his statue at Kilmany.

A group of us went down last weekend, and stayed at the Chirnside Hall Hotel. Nice and small, close to Duns, and the food was fabulous
