Hi all,

Just had my 2008 vantage in for a service and it's in need of a change of pads and discs on front and rear.

As you can Imagine the quote was astronomical, just under £3k.

Based on the Kent side of Surrey, any advice or direction to somewhere I could take the car for the repair?

Thanks all

Well you should be able to source OE parts online for under a £1300 ish Eurocar parts often have deals on. Then any local garage you trust really. 2-3 hours at £70-100 per hour. No different to any other car really. I did my own last time after a £450 quote for some rear pads fitting at the dealer.

You can get Brembo replacement discs from Autodoc. I was sceptical as the were only £150 for a pair of rear discs, but they came from Germany a week later and they’re genuine Brembo (and weigh a ton).

As Bogie says, you can pick up the Pagid pads from Eurocarparts, when they have a “flash” sale on. There was another chap on here you used to sell them too (do a search).

Rick Fraser from BMG auto parts who posts on here. Did a great deal for PHers and only issue earlier in the year was read pads were in short supply if you wanted OEM. Says something when I paid almost 50% for rear pads as I did for the 4 discs, front pads, handbrake pad and new wear sensors.

You can buy original Brembo discs online for less than 180 quid delivered for the fronts and slightly cheaper for the rears

The fronts ref # BREMBO BRAKE DISC SET 09.8780.21

The EBC brake pads are amazing. Again, 200 quid or a bit more for all the fronts and rears and if needed 35 for the handbrake pads.

Add a 100 or so for an independent garage and you can easily do the whole job for less than a 1000.

Qiuite a few threads on this, here's one https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I did genuine front discs from either motor doctor or auto doc (cant remember which now) and Porterfield pads all round (far less dust) for around £500 earlier this year, gave them to the Indy at service time and as he was pulling the wheels anyway, so extra cost for fitting was negligible.

Don't touch the OEM pads with a bargepole,. Porterfields are much cleaner, don't squeak and perform at least as well.
And don't forget, the caliper bolts have to be changed too.

You did well! A main dealer quoted me £900 for a rear pad swap.

A well regarded garage combined with a mail order of porterfield pads had the job done for quite a bit less than £300.

Ask them how thick the discs where measured at? (Fairly easy to measure yourself even when wheels still on and check what the minimum recommended thickness should be).

How do they know the pads need changing? might last you another 10 miles or 10,000 miles how much pad material remains?

Unless it was from a garage I trust most try to pull the wool over your eyes.

Pad change is an hour (I've done it in my lunch break) but if you don't feel confident changing yourself buy the pads/discs and take them to any competant garage to change.....if they need changing at all.

CB83, I agree with Mansfield.
You might not even need pads and discs.

When my Mercedes went for a 4 year service (about 30,000 miles), the main dealer reported needing front discs and pads. I was suspicious, so said change pads, but not discs.

It was most telling that they never ever mentioned discs at any of the subsequent services. However, when an edge ridge became noticeable to me, they were changed. By then the car was 18 years old !

Do you wonder we are so wary of main dealers?

Hi

If the warning light has not come up on your dashboard, then the brakes should not need replacing straight away unless there is some damage/corrosion to your brake discs or maybe a sticky caliper.
In my experience, once the warning light does come on, you would still have a safe period before you need to change them - dependant on your driving or condition of the brakes - maybe 500/800 miles ? Hard to say.

i have plenty of brakes in stock if required.

Rick, thats assuming the wear sensors are fitted and working. I wouldn't trust them, get your head under/round etc and have a look.

Try Ebay.com.au or NZ version but I think they might the same. Search for the Brembo part number for the front and rear discs. Pad can also be found also. I priced up a full set of front and rear discs and Pads for about Aus$800 delivered and tax to Aus from what I can gathered to be auto-doc. Wait for the 10 to 20% all of ebay site sales as well if you are not in a hurry.
