Hello

I just wanted to get some opinions from Boxster/Cayman owners.

I have owned my Boxster for 6 months and what I am finding is quite a lot of snobbery towards Boxster/Cayman owners and I just wanted to know if I was the only person to find this. The worst I have had so far was an Indi garage who did a really bad service and could not give a **** about my custom. At the time I did put it down to having a Boxster as the Indi seemed more bothered about the GT3s they were working on (To be fair my friend took his 997 C4s to the same garage and they did not give two hoots about him either). But after looking at a Facebook page I saw the post below and was thinking what the **** as some people are just nasty.

Poor service from an Indy garage sucks, hope that you'll be able to find a good one locally.

As far as rude idiots with internet connection go, well there are plenty. The hate is not particularly generated by your type of car I'd say.

Enjoy your Boxter and do please share experiences here, we (well most of us) like experiences of the automotive kind.

Find another indi, enjoy the car for the reasons you bought it, and stop using Facebook. You’ll be much more secure with your purchase that way.

I buy things I want and enjoy, couldn’t care less what others think.

If the 911 with rear engine is so great, why has Porsche used mid-engined racers since 1964?

IMO the snobs largely fall into two camps

Camp 1: People who cannot afford a Boxster/Cayman and try to improve their self-perceived status
Camp 2: People who buy 911s because of the badge/image - and not the driving

the "you bought a Boxster cos you couldn't afford a 911" snobbery is mostly down to Camp 3 - people who heard Jeremy Clarkson say that on Top Gear and can't think for themselves.

a friend of mine said something similar when i told him i was getting a Cayman - "oh why don't you get a 911 instead?" says that man that's never even driven a sports car before...

This is a interesting one, a number of years ago I owned a 997.2s pdk and a boxster 2.9 manual. If I’m being honest from a driving point of view I personally preferred the boxster.

The 6 cylinder boxster is hard to beat imo for its price point.

50 percent of people won't even notice what you're driving.
20 percent will notice you're driving a sports car but won't care.
15 percent will think you're lucky to be in a flash car.
10 percent will think you're for driving a Porsche.
4 percent will think you're a loser for for not buying a 911.
The rest will probably be Boxter/Cayman owners.

I had a Boxster for 2 years (I have a Cayman now) and never experienced any snobbery (I got in there first with my friends by explaining that I was fulfilling a lifelong dream to become a hairdresser and so had been out to buy a Boxster).

I personally wouldn't take it too seriously. Ultimately who cares? It's not a collectors grade 911 and that - for me - is part of the appeal. You get to drive a fantastic flat 6 sports car without any of the baggage that goes with a more expensive Porsche. Because of the "Poverty Pork" image, Boxsters actually get driven which is a lot more than you can say these days for a depressingly large number of 911s (it always makes me laugh when I read about somebody crying over a stone chip - after a few track days my Boxster looked like it had been driven through a gravel pit).

Finally, as everybody above has said, most of the people who makes these comments are people who don't have a Porsche and typically don't have any real interest in cars (ie. they think that a Diesel Audi A3 S-Line is a "sports car"). The people I have met who know about cars (including a former Porsche Super Cup champion) always speak highly of the Boxster. That tells you all you need to know really

Yeah when i brought my 981 Boxster GTS i got plenty from people in the office, the usual "couldn't afford a proper one" etc etc, yet they were driving the usual 4 door diesel saloons! However people who know their cars, my friends had a different opinion and really liked it, and they drive Mclarens/Astons/Porsches etc. I found it pretty bad on Porsche Owners FB page even by other Porsche owners. True Petrolheads won't give you a hard time!

Ignore and enjoy your car, I had 3 great years in mine!

I have a 911, but think the Boxster is a fantastic car and the ability to put the roof down is a bonus. I have couple of small people who've been in the back of the 911circa a dozen times.

Where are you in the South East, we should be able to recommend a good indie.

I certainly wouldn't take any notice about other people especially those in Pimped-up Chrysler..... probably a case of small man syndrome and glass houses shouldn't throw stones comes to mind. wink

Enjoy it.

Best reply, to those who don't have a 911 - "Oh, so what sort of Porsche do you own then?", "You don't? Oh dear..."

At a recent track day a chap in a 4.0 GT3 said he thought the 981 BGTS was the peach of the Porsche cars....

OK, I couldn't hang on to him on track, but mutual respect was shown both on and off track.

The worse snobbery I’ve experienced (twice) was with the local group of Porsche Club GB. Ten years ago I’d just purchased a new Boxster S and a friend a new 997 turbo. We both decided to join PCGB, when we went along they were all over him like a rash (him more than the car) and I was very much treated like a poor relation. Last year I thought I’d give PCGB local group another go and we were treated like lepers, rude horrible cliquey people. In fairness I’ve been told this is not representative of the majority of PCGB groups. I since joined the Independent Porsche Club and they they couldn’t have been more different, friendly, enthusiastic “normal” people. Other than that we’ve experienced no snobbery at all.

The same logic could be applied to any range if cars.
You could equally say that someone has a 3-Series BMW because they can’t afford a 5-Series. Someone has an E-Class Mercedes because they can’t afford an S-Class. Someone drives a Golf because they can’t afford a Passat......it’s idiotic.
People make there own decisions about how much they choose to spend on a car that suits their needs - and I’m sure there are plenty of shiny exoticas stretching their owners to the limit - to the point where they are afraid to use them and add mileage.
Poor Garage Service is a different topic, i think.

Hey Guys.... Try buying and "ordinary" new 911 S ....and the GT3/ RS brigade will cut you dead ..hahahaha
I'm totally up for the ...."so how do you find your Q3 that your wife made you buy "?
I bought a 911S and absolutely love it, but if I was taken off record ...sometimes it niggles me from time to time.....should I have got that Cayman GTS( I'm just not a convertibles person) ...and used the balance on dozens or month long European touring holidays.
Got what I wanted and stuff the office bores , who to a "man" drive the greatest collection of drudge wheels one could imagine.

Thanking you for the recommendations. I am in the Gatwick area. There are a few Indies in the area which one of them is one of the crowd I was talking about. I think I am going to try Precision Porsche in Bluebell Railway next.

I've just sold my B GTS and it will hopefully be replaced by the soon to be released 718 6 cylinder. It was the one Porsche my wife would drive and together we put on over 20,000 pleasurable (non commuting) miles in 4 years.

During the same time I've also had a number of 911's and GT cars - all replaced while the Boxster remained. It just ticks a lot of boxes with ease of use and a fantastic engine.

The only slight stick we've received is because its open top...and we drove everywhere with it down!
