Ultra rare mk 1 Escort at upcoming auction
Discussion
I had the exact same problem with a heavily modded X Flow years ago I was still on the inertia starter exact same issue post build, once started it would fire up all day but lazy like I tried two replacment Lucas reman starters but things remained the same, a bigger ground cable from batt direct to block and even bigger starter cable made little difference I was even melting the live post insulator on the starters due to the load I also had biggest heavy duty batt that would fit the tray, so pretty much had all bases covered finally I changed the ring gear on the flywheel and fitted a Pinto 2.0 pre-engaged unit problem solved this motor also had severe CR 11.5 + IIRC and a big cam heavy dual springs etc , all back in the day of course

I ended up with a big JCB battery mounted in a bespoke tray in the boot over the axel, but a higher powered starter would have been better.
All the paperwork for that engine is long gone with the car, but it was quite a special 2.1 Pinto with stamped numbers matching the head to that exact block and was built by a (Phil?) Jones.
I bought it from someone who's RS2000 was stolen when the engine had been removed for a respray, so Im not sure exactly the name.I do remember it having a 300deg cam in it and standard starters struggled..

Unusual colour scheme but what’s it going to sell for.....
https://www.historics.co.uk/buying/auctions/2021-0...
It sold today for £43,016.https://www.historics.co.uk/buying/auctions/2021-0...
And the supposed ex-Hannu Mikkola Twin Cam sold for £63,840.....which was probably due to Hannu passing away between the car being first listed back in January, and the auction taking place today, despite all indications this was not the original car in any way.

Purchased 2 genuine RS3100 front wings from WOW in the late80's IIRC they came from Germany , I remember there being a long delay and he was saying he had health problems
Would you by any chance have any RS3100 spares left ?Edited by Zener on Wednesday 20th January 15:03
And any photos of your car ?

Looks wonderful, and even though its a crap advert for such an expensive car (typically these days) with no interior photos etc., I'd say that's not hugely over priced for a concours show standard RS1600 in a rare colour.
The one I went to see at the dealer in Bucks over the winter was only a few k less money, but no where near as good.
This blue one is probably a genuine £55-60k car in current climate....IMHO.

NICE, did i mention i had a monza blue RS1600 way back then
Said it before, out of all the standard AVO Escorts, the RS16 easily had the most character, nippy with very well balanced handling. That car is a Great deal of money, be interesting if it sells around that figure, it looks better than new though.

Apparently stated off life as a "standard" pinto engined MK 2. I am not familiar with that cam cover, any one know what it is ?
120k,,,,,,,,,,, really,,,,,,,,,,, blimy!
And a Mk 1 RS16 https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/11681562

Cam cover looks like a similar design, but not exactly the same, as the covers used by Zakspeed for their BDA's and derivatives.I am not familiar with that cam cover, any one know what it is ?

120k is a joke, unless it can be proved to be the original shell, and even then, that's very bold pricing....!!
That is a silly load of money.
Is the cam over a Brian Hart item, like this?

Escorts are fun for about 2 hours and then come a bit wearing. My Old Man had a new Mexico around 1972 ish and I can recall the drive from the SW up to Dundee. Jesus Christ, it took forever and damn it was noisy.
Cars like the 2002Tii and the Alfa GTV were a lot more money new but worth less now. Bizarre. Father Touring drove a yellow Tii belonging to a friend around 1974 ish and truly coveted it in that 'I wish I could afford this' way.
Yep. I had an Escort Sport from nearly new(NEC 567P, nice reg from Lakeland Ford) it was a seriously basic Escort ,white with the red stripe and black vinyl seats, like the Pop ,which went a bit faster than a 1.1. Nice faux Minilites, though.Apart from a lovely ‘snick-snick’ gear change a nice RS type wheel and powerful spotlights maybe Hella, but the reflectors soon rusted ilwas really just a very ordinary car of its time : seriously basic compared to the Ghia with its soundproofing and thicker carpets, etc ...arguably a little above average. Ironic now to see it hyped above Avengers, Vauxhall Magnum,Renault 10 Gordini, Fiat Mirafiori etc.Cars like the 2002Tii and the Alfa GTV were a lot more money new but worth less now. Bizarre. You are 100% - I owned in order a Mk1 Escort 1300GT, Mk2 Escort 1600Sport and a Mk2 RS2000. All were basic, all were noisy, all needed a 5 speed gearbox very badly and build quality was also very low rent (the 1600 Sport in particular).Edited by Lester H on Tuesday 18th May 23:07
Would I like to own any of them again - probably - however, the VW Golf I owned just few short years later was so much better in every dept.
I can live with the Escort hype, however, I don't 'get' the (very very) silly prices....they are just not worth the money?
