Not bizarre at all, as neither had the competition heritage in the UK (or even in Europe) that the Escort has.
You're aware of the racing pedigree of the Alfa 105 and 2002....? So, yet again, you are missing the point....and clearly don't have that connection with it, which is fine.
Just because you don't understand, there are plenty that do.

Yeah, its a beauty of a car, some great design and build ideas executed, some I am not so keen on, in the name of originality, but wouldn't mind owning it, thats for sure!
I'd rather it had the FORD bonnet lettering and a Springalex. The rest I approve of. I wonder what it cost to build? I bet there's at least 100k in there. But I'd be just the same with his £££ and Murray can drive a bit.

Gordon Murray has just had a Mk1 Escort built from scratch, from an base model 2dr car, as a daily smoker.
OK, this thing bares little resemblance mechanically to a standard Escort, but from the outside it could be any MK1 Escort, albeit with some tasty mod cons.
Christ knows how much the build has cost, got to be upwards of 120k ?
Now, I dare say, he knows a few things about car design and driveability, why has he chosen an Escort?
He explains fully, why during the build process.

The Millington powered Alfa they built was simply beautiful.

The performance of the Twink must have been other-worldly when it came out
It’s still Up GTI performance now
Closest I got to Escort exotica back then was a few drives in my friend’s RS1800 in the mid 80s. Was twice the price of the RS2000s we all had but although it revved eagerly it wasn’t any quicker. Trouble for him was he wasn’t rich enough to mod it and unleash the potential ( or bigger bills ) so it stayed standard.
A friend from back then bought a useable MK2 RS for £15k a few years back - it’s just a weekend toy but i genuinely toy with buying something similar if I can as it’s just such a great car to drive for fun. I’d like to try an Alfa GTV 2000 - the 1300GT junior a friend had when we all had Escorts was a bit disappointing but if it had RS2000 performance I think I’d have enjoyed it more

It's a gorgeous car but build cost was considerably higher than the estimate. The detail is sublime.

I saw the Alfa at Retro Rides a couple of years ago at Goodwood and it was bloody quick off the line. The sequential box was a nice touch too. The Millington lump sounded epic.

I’d love to have something like that built but it’d be lottery win territory for me

On paper that was about the equal of a 1750 GTV.The performance of the Twink must have been other-worldly when it came out

The RS1800's had a similar single twin choke Weber to the RS2000 that strangled it somewhat.
I've never driven a 1300 Alfa but the 1600 was okayish. The 1750/2000 is where that engine really thrives.
That TC does seem very quick - almost as if Ford 'enhanced' it for the road testers.

Hmm, I dunno so much - they were about 110bhp weren’t they in an 830/840 kg carThe RS1800's had a similar single twin choke Weber to the RS2000 that strangled it somewhat.

Roughly the same performance as a Mk2 RS 2000/1800
Sub 9 to 60 and around 111/112 on the bowl ( few mph more on a long, long straight with no scrub )
No I meant more the fact they offered 80s hot hatch performance back in the 60s
My friend’s RS2000 we reckon is slightly modded, Kenlowe, manifold and system .....but we reckon maybe a 2.1 or big valve head as it just has the legs on his son’s Swift Sport up to motorway speeds. Without pulling the engine apart it’s hard to know - previous owner and scant history didn’t show
Yes, a 2000 GTV would be more my thing I reckon - I can remember following one back through Wales when I had my RS and there was nothing in it really - thing is they’re Escort money now too!

They do indeed have a bit of extra go Mark
They’re another one commanding a decent wodge of cash now - 2002 Turbos even more
I like this format, proper roads tests none of the journo poetic rubbish like 'acceleration similar to a particle inside the Large Hadron Collider, with a ride to make hurtling down a mountain atop a tea tray seem soft' - nope, simple, straightforward road tests - they were the days....They’re another one commanding a decent wodge of cash now - 2002 Turbos even more

CAR, Performance Car and Fast Lane all did similar but Autocar & Motor did more detail. In the U.S. it was Car & Driver and Road & Track.

I own an RS1600. A very early one in fact and a BB49 Halewood built car. It's my third.
So no, I 'don't understand/have that connection" etc. Currently in a million pieces, but an RS1600 nonetheless.
In that case I really don't understand your comment then So no, I 'don't understand/have that connection" etc. Currently in a million pieces, but an RS1600 nonetheless.
But lets park that now.
BB49 RS16............
Not many of them left.
