For those of us in the UK at least, it will not have escaped our notice that our census returns are due this month.

Census questions can vary however one that we have never been asked, and I thought might be interesting here, is what car do you drive? So casting your mind back over the decades what was your regular car on each census date?

To get the ball rolling my return would have read:

2021 Audi A6.
2011 VXR8
2001 Volvo 850
1991 Renault 25
1981 Escort

Out of interest what happens if you just ignore the census? If it's something like jail or a fine has that actually happened to anyone / many people?

From the government website:

You must complete the census by law or you could be fined up to £1,000
Some questions are labelled as voluntary. It is not an offence if you do not answer these.’

Yes but do many people actually get the book thrown at them?

A quick Google reveals that a smattering of folk were prosecuted in 2012 for not completing the form. So enforcement is there.

1961 1948 Morris 8 Series E (on the farm - too young for a licence.
1971 Morris Marina 1.3
1981 VW Jetta GLi
1991 BMW 3251
2001 Mercedes C220 CDi W123
2011 Same Mercedes
2021 Mercedes C200CDi W124

Looking at the list it is clear how I have changed as I have aged. The Marina as a company car, the sporty Jetta in my own business with two small children, moving up the ladder to the BMW as I prospered, the kids quitting the nest and me settling down to staid transport since I had my classics. An interesting topic. Thanks OP.
