I've cancelled viewing the white S3. My heart is in a S1.

Nah. 2.8 manual - rare for a reason. The Series 3 is a much better bet - big slogger 4.2 with injection and taller gearing means it will drive a LOT better.

Imo the short wheelbase cars look a bit odd to me with the long tail and short doors - the LWB shell balances the shape out. I always thought the S1 looked a bit flat faced and the Series 2 Jaguar looked prettiest.

Wheels: Kents look great on a Series 2/3 but utterly wrong on an earlier car. The stainless Series 3 wheel trims have really come of age and suit the car.

Pepperpots should be used as plant pots with the tyres turned inside out. There is no excuse for them.

Stick with plan A and buy the white Series 3 IF it's a good one and you can bag it for 6k or less.

I agree that the Kent alloys look wrong on the S1-has to be steels and chrome trims on an S1, but I love the pepperpots on a series3, suit it perfectly

Jags. I love Jags.

I've had a 240, E type 3.8 FHC, XJ40, X300, X350 and a.......

Daimler S1 2.8 auto

There was a guy on here with a white S1, it took my fancy, so I got busy on ebay.

I 'won' the Daimler. Lucky me. I jumped on a train one Sunday evening mid winter, the French fellow met me at the train station, he drove me to his house in some other car on the middle of Dartmoor.

The Daimler was parked up, it was dark, cold and pissing down. He explained that the bonnet release didnt work, but showed me how to get it to open.

The AED choke didnt work, but he'd fitted an lpg kit and explained that on gas it would start from cold.

It would run from 1 petrol tank only when warm, the gauge didnt work. The gas tank gauge didnt work.

The heating didnt work.

We got it going, he directed me to the main road.

I stopped and filled the tank and coughed and spluttered my way home to Southampton.

In the days that followed I tried to fill it with gas, plugged the hose onto the car and squeezed the trigger, gas pissed all over the forecourt floor, I st my pants, returned the nozzle, no money was showing on the pump so I drove off as fast as I could.

A new electronic dizzy, leads, plugs coil etc improved it.

Swapped the aed carbs for Rover 2000TC manual choke carbs.

I ripped out the gas kit and sold it on ebay.

I got it running really well, but it was a wreck, winter was coming and I sold it.

S1's are the best XJ's IMO, Totally pure with the classic Jag dash layout and SWB's look and handle great and are rare.

These two have found their way into ACA's modern sale next Wednesday. Wonder what they'll go for?

About 50p and a Twix.

It's another thirsty rusty old Jag nobody wants. There's no future for stuff like that.

How about this one then?

Has a decent MOT history - although it's run out now.

OLDBENZ.

You have an email.
Apologies for the delay, Tarquin. I received a forwarded email from Pistonheads but the email they gave for you bounced back.

I was aware my car had a concours history in its earlier life before my ownership and featured in a number of publications - including the Roger Hicks book you mentioned. Thanks for getting in touch!

Give it time!

I can remember when MK2s, S-Types and later S1s were just another thirsty rusty old Jag nobody wanted. laugh

I had a Sand Gold S-Type 66 auto I think it had red leather with the cylinder head in the boot. The block had a crack in it the full length of the cooling rail at the top. Obviously frozen at some point. It was reg'd as a 3.4 and badged as such but had a 3.8 in. It had very little rust in. I never got it sorted, I paid £150 for it around 1985 and it got passed around a group of us. I swapped it with a mate for a 2L Alfa nord engine & box which was going in my hillclimbing Ford Pop. The poor S Type spent a chunk of its life on a tow rope being moved around. We bought it in Lambourn.

Fill us all in on the history of your 2.8 klunk, I know you’ve mentioned it before but it’d be a pain to find …

I’m in the same position as you workwise - counting down to retirement and delivering groceries - no stress compared to the pre-covid job! Which supermarket?

It sounds like you got really lucky with your S1.

I worked as a part-time delivery driver for Sainsburys in Berkshire before I retired. Once you do you'll wonder how you ever found time to go to work!

I appreciate this is not an Xj coupe and is 6 cylinders short of John Steeds car,

Even so, I think this could be fun, the triple Webers would sound amazing!
