So is my '83 MK1 Golf GTI a classic? If not, when will it be??
That depends, why did you buy it? Because it's different to what everyone else has? Because you used to like them when they came out or it reminds you of a different time? Because you like the different driving experience it gives you compared to a modern?

If the answer to any of those is 'yes' then it's a classic, to you anyway and that's all that matters.

Perhaps a good definition for a classic car might include not needing an ECU.

I don't see why you'd pick that myself. Why not pick similar advances that have automated tasks for the driver, such as "must have a starting handle" or "can't have automatic ignition advance"?

Also by your rule I'd say loads of vehicles from the 1967 VW 411 onwards would be rules out. These had Bosch electronic ignition, from D-Jetronic onwards. While these may may not use chips they are still electronic control units.

Perhaps I should have put a smilie on the end of the line.

And also, in the UK an insurqance company refines any car older then 10 years as a classic, and you can get classic car insurance for it.
Not sure that is always the case, my 16 year old Cavalier for instance.

Definately not a classic whatever anyone says.
However, my two 53 registered MG ZRs are considered as classics and cost £131 & £115 to insure through an MGCC scheme!
