Personal opinion, and am not disrespecting the preferences of other P5B enthusiasts on here, but I prefer a P5B with original-spec chrome rostyles. And a re-worked engine smile

I agree that the cars look best on the original Rostyles. What do you mean by "a re-worked engine"?

Maybe a hi-torque 3.9 or 4.6.

I always thought that the BW35 was the weak link in the whole P5B car package. Is there another alternative 4 or 5 speed auto that could be easily substituted?

I made a study of this subject when I was involved with TR7V8s, and couldn't find any automatic boxes at a reasonable price that would offer an overdrive top gear. The problem with the Range Rover units is that they are for 4WD vehicles. I believe they did make some 2WD equivalents for special vehicles such as ambulances, but never managed to get hod of one.

Am totally guessing here but if I remember correctly Jaguar gearboxes can be used or adapted to suit the Rover V8. Don't know details myself but am sure it's easy enough to find out.

Anyone planning a conversion will need to go back far enough to avoid any electronic control circuitry.

That's a very good point Singlecoil.

This could be an interesting link for anyone planning a 4-sp auto conversion, or at least it might hopefully point them in the right direction: -

Great cars. My father owned one for many years (BYL723H). Bordeaux red coupe with mulberry leather. The interior was a work of art and had that coach-built feel. Picnic tables, slide-out tool kit under the radio, dual zone heater / audio, toggle switches all over the shop. Chrome quarter light latches, combined rear armrest / drinks holders. They must have lost money on every car.

It also used to blow coolant hoses for fun(typically late at night)and needed several gearboxes but it was a wonderful car. I'll always remember the rev counter wafting around the 3000rpm mark , in much the same way as the car wafted. I remember the day Dad bought it home after a body resto and I dropped my bike on it, chipping off a thumbnail-sized chunk of not-quite-cured new Bordeaux Red paint.

I still see it around locally occasionally (the chap who bought it in 1990 still runs it) but I can't excuse him changing the interior colour to magnolia - even though it's his car now.

My grandfather (who lived next door) ran another coupe (white with black leather, EJB900K) at the same time that was used to take five children to school in daily. Like others, I can't believe they aren't commanding proper money. One of the most "British" cars ever.
I came across this rather old post whilst Goggling EJB900K. I owned this car from late 80 or early 81 to late 82 I think. I bought it from someone in Lyndhurst, I was living in Southampton at the time.
I sold it to a guy near Fawley.
I often wonder whether it still survives today - hence the search of the reg.
One weird aspect though - it was about 10 years after we sold her when I realised that our 3 kids had the initial E, J & B, and they were born in that order. Nothing planned, it just happened that way!

Cheers
Paul

well on DVLA it has -
Date of Liability 01 07 1985
Date of First Registration 07 09 1971
Cylinder Capacity (cc) . 3531 cc

which at least suggests it's not being used on the roads here for the last few years

I thought the 3.5s were all 3528cc (?)
