G12 Petit?https://youtu.be/S6557yAhims?t=214

On the sands, yep, pair of G12s, road going! Look a bit rough here but both were fitted with Imp transaxles owned by two Norfolk brothers - Norfolk coast (they were well-known there at the time, and by the Norfolk cops!).
Imagine that scenario today? Impossible.
The red car is of course Richard Petit's own design - he chose the Ginetta G12 as his base and came to England to further it. Amazing how little this story is told. Perhaps if he'd chosen Loti it would be different.
The car is still around, even raced, as are some copies of the car.
Petit was a very clever designer.
He became Head of Advanced Vehicle Concepts at Ford Design Centre at Dearborn - the tall lanky guy in the pic. He used the British Ginetta G12 to pursue his own design for his Master of Arts degree specialising in industrial design. The guy with the fag is Wilfrid Becker, director of Wayne State University's Industrial Design Dept in Detroit.

Did SL stand for "sheer luxury"
My very first car. It had a lockable glove box on the console, chrome wheel trims and 2-tone paint. I can't think of anything else which made it different from the base model. No wonder the Japanese had us gasping when they sold cars with radios. This may be of interest to some on here. Might be a bit modern for some. From '82:
