I don't remember a 1600s or is that the engine, there again I don't remember a 1600cc Datsun
There were indeed plenty of Datsun 1600's about..just not for very long! The mechanical bits were a revelation as regards build, performance and smooth, last forever reliability. Unfortunately the bodywork was beautifully finished rubbish and rusted faster than any Hillman Minx could imagine. A family friend bought a new 1979 Datsun 140Y Coupe and at just 18 months old, the wing mirror mounted on the drivers door literally fell off one morning when he closed it after driving to work. There was nothing left under the mounting just a big hole. At two years, bubbles appeared everywhere and fearing it would be an MOT failure traded it back to Datsun for a new Cherry..nobody else would take the old car back. The replacement was very smooth but had arm wrenching steering at parking speeds yet went well with a slick gear change. It still managed to start bubbling through at 3 years old though and that was a cared for, garaged and well maintained car..neglected ones were not so fortunate! Those Cosmic wheels were lovely, I always wanted those for my Mk2 Mini Cooper but could never afford them!

I can't remember if I've ever added some of my old cars, so here goes.
My tastefully "Customised" 1.1 Escort with Chrome custom grille, Spotlights, Brown (hand painted) dashboard and cosmic wheels. The brakes must have been an optional extra not supplied with this particular car. Bought for £90 and sold three years later for £50 not including the wheels.
My Spitfire. Fun car which I should have looked after a bit better. Later stolen and although we eventually tracked down the new owner, a cock up by the Police with their report and the claim that the guy bought it off a bloke in a pub car park for cash, meant that I never got it back.
My dad's Mk1 Luton Bodied Transit, by this time, hand painted in purple (he claims that's the paint he had , so that's the paint he used!). This is the vehicle that I learned to drive on and the whole family loved it. Eventually sold to a guy who used it to transport his motorbike collection back to Germany. My mustard coloured Datsun 1600s in the forground, a really great and quite fast car far as I was concerned at the time. Though must have started rusting before it left the factory.
Our next transit, which seemed like a rocket ship compared to the previous one. This was an ex Kodac van. My Datsun in the foreground again

That was a rare bird, a 2 door Corsair!!
Didn't even know they were made, don't think I've ever seen one.A quick Google check and they were only made to order.

I'm guessing that few were made in comparison to the four door because nobody really wanted them so most probably were especially ordered but more because of low demand. Oddly though, they now look the better proportioned version and would be better regarded today.
I could never quite work out what the Corsair was meant to offer that the Cortina didn't. It was certainly more expensive.

It was supposedly a more up market car, having the newer, smoother 1700cc V4 engine instead of the old in-line 1500cc kent engine.ATTAK Z said:
