Common as muck!
Nicely done Sir beer
thumbup though utterly upstaged by the curiously good looking black GT6, spangly Lotus Carlton and delectable AC Ace that then followed on this thread biggrin

So which do you prefer ?

I had an earlier Mallard BT Escort Cos and it broke a bit.
To look at the Escort.
To drive the Delta.
Good answer, although I've never been in a Delta.

I could sit staring at an Escort Cos all day and tbh a nice Delta too.

Top work!
Cheers, chaps! beer
But not due to any "skill and astute purchasing" by me, though.
They were bought by my late father a long time ago.
The SS100 came from one of his friends in 1965 (three years before I was born!)
The Ace arrived in 1977 – my "vehicle of choice" at that time was a Raleigh Chopper….
These were his favourite cars, so everytime I look at them I remember him, which is nice because I think back to the times we spent tinkering with them.
But also a bit sad because he's not here anymore.
I don't know what your father would have paid for them back then - no idea ...

My dad had loads of copies of Car Mechanics from the late 60s (that I stupidly threw out about 20 years ago when I moved house) and I remember leafing through them over the years and Aston Martins bring advertised for not a lot ... so they haven't always been unobtainable by the masses (as I am sure the SS100 especially, is now)!

The SS100 was £375 in 1965 (about £7,000 now)
The Ace was £4,000 in 1977 (about £26,500 now)

1962 AC Ace (often called the Ruddspeed Ace, with the 2.6 Ford straight six engine from Ken Rudd).
These were the last of the AC Aces before a very tall chicken farmer from Texas put a V8 under the bonnet and the Cobra legend was born.
(He was very tall, not the chickens…)
The ACOC says there were 36 of these built at AC plus two by Ken Rudd (one being the prototype).
It is fabulous. I know a chap who has a red one.

The chap reclining on the wing is the first owner of the car – he bought it in 1937.
This picture was taken in 1938 (I think) and possibly in Scotland.

69 years later he called in to see me to make sure I was looking after “his car”!

(The silver SS was originally owned by a good friend of his and they used to compete against each other in international rallies in the late 1930’s.
This was the first time he and the two SS100’s had been together since then.)

Your Ace looks very similar to Simon Taylor's lovely car (below), which is the best example of the rare Ace-Ford 2.6 I have seen.

Thanks. They were still a fair lot and not your average car back then either, so it seems.

Hi Roy - yes, they are almost the same apart from a few minor details (carbs, exhaust etc)
His is also in much better condition....
In the second picture Simon's looks a little darker (?) - poor quality photo, no doubt!
(That was taken many years ago.)
Simon has owned his twice - a "keeper" now, it seems.
Mine went straight from the factory to Ken Rudd for race preparation for the first owner.
The bottom picture shows him having had an "off" while racing (anyone recognise the circuit? Taken in 1963 I think)
The car had a bare-metal paint job in the early 1990's and there was evidence of skillful repairs to the various bumps and bangs sustained on the track (including that OSR rear thump against the post).

Still, even using todays equivalents a return of 10,000 % on the SS100 isn't too bad. The poor old Ace barely made 500%.

Such a cool story, what a cool man and still interested in the car too.

Last weekend up at Uxbridge Auto show... Dad took the Jensen, I took the little Beetle.

Only to be upstaged by this parking a few cars along.

A car from the original 1969 Love Bug film, 'H2' - used for all the fast track sequences. Fitted with a Porsche 356 1600cc engine, 356 drum brakes and a few other tweaks.

Unfortunately they wouldn't entertain an offer on it
