Yeh they did some scary stuff like that back then eek widow makers indeed frown in saying that the disc brakes from that era were also pretty piss poor , I seem to remember the upgrade for a late 60's Camaro for example was fitting Vette front disc brakes IIRC scratchchin

Lovely Corvette, that. How's the 390 coming on - did that ever get finished?

This design really has aged well, I think they are stunning and that is a lovely example. I bet it sounds fantastic!

I think that the C2 has always been my favourite Corvette. This picture confirms my thoughts. cloud9
The one with the split rear screen is better IMO. There's a swage line down the centre of the roof that continues on the tail, the split rear window continues this line. Fail to see what the idea of doing away with it was. hehe

66 427 Big Block
Can you give us some driving impressions ?

How does it compare to other cars of the period, E-Type for example ?
Cheers Fellas, it does get a lot of attention, especially now that I've colour changed from white to year correct trophy blue

MPH, Naturally comparing it to an E is common. I also have a 65 4.2. Totally different obviously

The Vette is awesome, I love plopping around in it, massive torque obviously and no need to rev it. Wakes the whole village up.

But the E is more the drivers car. The series 1 has always been the one that loves to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck and driven hard. The E Type is just an amazingly easy car to drive and it's not far off 60 years old. My wife happily drives it without breaking a sweat (That's testament to it I reckon) She hates driving awkward cars

Driving this 427 is (i would imagine) like trying to tame a wild stallion. You have to treat it with big respect especially on that skinny rubber. Maybe it's just me but I'm not as comfortable driving it fast.

Don't ask me to choose between the 2.

4 years with the current company and still no sign of it. Incredibly slow build given that I gave him a beautifully painted shell and a rebuilt engine.

It's been so long I've lost the enthusiasm for it

Yes luckily this year gave it discs all round.

The RT now I never knew that eek no wonder they suffered brake failures/fade on the RT440 whilst filming that quite famous film with the Ford GT in laugh

A mate's Australian V8 from a similar era was also fitted with four drum brakes. At least they had a servo, but they were still rather small drums, only really good for two or three decent stops, and only only the flat. eek

Whereas my first car, a French job from the same year with about as many horsepower as the Camaro's aircon consumed, had four decent sized disc brakes. It was only quick downhill smile

Looking at the 'Vette and the E-type gives the impression (well, to me anyway) that the E-type is far more aerodynamic. Anyone who has driven an E-type a lot will tell you that the track is too narrow and that it isn't that aerodynamic, getting pretty light on the steering at speed. But to me the 'Vette looks as though it will fare worse, somehow as if the body was an afterthought plonked on the chassis. Please, I don't mean this to seem rude, just my observation, but the question is - do they handle at speed? I love the change of colour by the way.

ETA:- Now if you were to put a DFV Cosworth in the back of the people carrier, that would be fun!

I'd say my C2 Corvette handles well at speed. Having had Series 1 E-Types in the past, subjectively the Corvette handles as well, but differently at speed. It doesn't go light at the front, but the rear suspension doesn't feel as competent as the E-Type's. It also doesn't match the E-Type's ride which is amazing for a car of its age.

However, the Corvette's handling suffers far more if components are past their best. When I bought it, it handled exactly like I was expecting - rubbish. However, with rebuilt suspension, new rear wheel bearings and most of all, new tyres it has been a revelation.

Overall, I'd say the E-Type is better, but it's closer than you might think.

I think it’s the undercut shape of the body that gives it that impression. They are opposites but similar years of construction. The Vette was the reason jaguar put the different gearing in the diff, didn’t want to be outdone by the Americans.

I’ll happily drive at 90-100 in the E, maybe more but the Vette just sounds too painfully mechanical to give me peace of mind at speed. Revs low but sounds but I think it’s the side pipes playing games. Fasted I’ve been is 90 briefly. The rest of the time 60-70 tops.

It has a transverse leaf spring set up at the back. Rides well but a bit bouncy. Not pushed it yet, just feel happy plopping around using the huge torque to take short shifting 2nd to 4th

I have a bit of play in one side rear bearing. Would like to get it sorted. Who does your repairs?
