Nice pic towman. I'll try and find some of mine and scan them in. Got a few good ones. Not just of jets but things like Shackletons as well.

R988 - how come you managed to find just about the dullest look A4 Skyhawk scheme possible?

I just wish I knew how to post pictures!

Try and dig up some pictures of Douglas Skyraiders, Phnatoms, Vigilantes or early Tomcat schemes if you can. You will see what I mean.

Those colourful shots of the F-14s you found were essentially anniversary paint schemes commemorating 30 years of Tomcat service and were pretty close to what the Tomcats initially wore in 1973 to about 1979. In fact, if you ever see the movie "The Final Countdown" you will see lots of colourful Navy aircraft. It was made in 1979 just before the toning down order was issued.

I would also suggest a search for USAF aircraft pictures from the period 1950 to 1965. In that time frame, most USAF aircraft were left in natural metal and bedecked with all sorts of colourful markings. However, because of their commitment to Vietnam, the USAF adapted comouflage from the mid 1960s onwards and the colouful period was over.

Thats nothing. I've seen a full size Star Wars X-wing fighter on the back of a truck heading down the M40 near Denham .

Missing its wings though.

You must mean this light grey over white colour schemes because there really isn't anything else I can find without going to the dark blue of WW2 and Korea. This scheme was pretty much standard through the mid 60s to late 70s and used on everything from F-14s, A-4s, F-4s, RA-5s etc if this isn't what your referring to then I don't know what you mean. If you do have pics email them to me and I can host them and post them.

Thank's for finding those shots.

They are more colourful than today though, aren't they?

If course, the most colourful US Navy planes ever were those of the 1930s. They usually had an all silver or bare metal fuselage together with bright yellow wings and tail fin. Although rare, there are some colour photos around of Devastators, Buffalos and early Wildcats in these pre-war colouful schemes.
