I know of an empty house nearby, I have tried to contact the owner through the land registry to buy it with no response.

It has been that way for a year, and I did a little bit of work to stop it becoming derelict ( fixed broken window that was leaking )

What do I have to do to start the claim for squatters rights ?

Exactly! In reality, what if the chap owning the place had a reason for it to be empty. What gives you the right to take over somebodies home and "take possession".

Just a hunch, but I don't think you'd get much support for this kind of thing on PH.

Exactly. You wouldn't be able to connect utilities, phone etc. either, and you couldn't leave the house empty as you'd come home to it boarded up and your gear on the pavement.

Squatting is for the very brave or desperate, imo.

What, unlike the people who have gone about trying to claim abandoned cars?

I think "squatters rights" are very different to actually claiming ownership though.

If i owned the said house, i would use this thread to sue your ass for trespass, you had no right to start with entering the house yet alone "fixing" a leaking window. Well done on spotting the window was leaking from outside, NOT

If it was one of mine, Id have someone large and unfriendly visit you and eject you.

I don't think "trespass" works like that.

If someone is leaving a house to rot and the OP has made attempts to contact them, then fair play - claim squatters rights, it's all legal.

Don't ask me how to though, I haven't a clue smile

And sadly the law would be on their side, not yours, and your large and unfriendly chum might find themselves nicked.

Think it does

In law, trespass can be:

1. the criminal act of going into somebody else's land or property without permission of the owner or lessee;

And if some distant rich twit hasn't the time or sense to look after his property, and let it sit in the middle of an otherwise clean street, a magnet for rats and junkies, why not someone responsible do the sensible thing and relieve said twit of his burdensome load?

Claim the rights I say.

If said scum jump through a couple of minor hoops, it's not trespass, the law is on their side and you'd need a court order to evict.
