Hi Rolex, I read this topic last night and it has got me really worried about your condition.
4 weeks ago I had very similar conditions to yours. I spoke to my GP and he said go and see the optician, I got seen that morning at Spec Savers. The optician was very worried because he noticed pressure on my optic discs and booked me into see an opthalmologist the next day. I saw him and he told me I had high intra-cranial pressure, I got worried because he was talking about lumber punctures and drilling my head to relieve the pressure, just to make sure he booked me in another local hospital the next day for a CT scan. I had that and they admitted me into the ward that day, something is really wrong, I thought. I knew the consultant, I went to school with his daughters, anyway he took my parents away and told them what was wrong(Dad is a doc too) then he came through to tell me, they had looked at the CT scan and I was found to have a brain tumour. They kept me in until 9pm doing tests checking my testicles and x-rayed my chest for obvious secondaries (ie cancers else where) nothing was seen so I was discharged and was told I'd have to be at a specialist neurology unit hospital on the monday in another city. I met the surgeon and lots of other doctors and nurses, the surgeon wanted to do a biopsy of the tumour and take it out "later on." They wanted me to have an MRI scan before I slept on the monday night. After my parents, my fiancee and I were taken into the office to see the MRI scan on the doctor's computer, it was interesting, saw the tumour and Dad told me that the pressure was so great on the right side of my brain was smooth, not like it should be, which worried me. I was told it was on my right frontal lobe, apparently my personality and other things could change. I said goodbye to my family and that was it, I knew was going in for surgery some time on tuesday, later on. I had a seizure in the morning, hit my head on the side of the bed or table, luckily the nurse was shouted on by the guy across from me on the ward, it took 4 of them to lift me back on the bed. The surgeon came in later and said we'll go for the full removal and I said great! My family came back and saw I was very badly bruised from "eating bed" around my eye and teeth were almost in agony. Anyway, they took me to theatre late afternoon/evening and removed it. I was given special socks to stop me from getting DVTs in my legs and when I woke up from the anaesthetic I was talking normally and not confused at all, the even gave me a morphine clicker, it was great!
The surgeon came in the next day and she said it was a great success and she was pleased with my progress. I said I want to drive, get back driving because the consultant that I saw 1st said that I should "not drive for the time being" I was gutted. The surgeon said it was up to her and the DVLA and she said I can't drive for at least 6 months since the last seizure! I was given lots of drugs by the nurses.

Sorry I'll finish this later! Need food!
I'm glad to hear that you made a good recovery.

However, brain tumours generally present rather differently to that which is described by the original poster. Also, to reassure the original poster, the optician has seen him, and examined him, and found nothing untoward. That makes it very unlikely that he has a brain tumour, if the optician looked into the eye.

eek Hope things turn out okay for you Absolutely. As a precaution I am certainly going to book another eye test now. I will use a small independant this time rather then a chain optician.

Take every precaution that you feel is necessary, but please don't panic based on the experiences of one other person. The symptoms you describe are very common, indeed, on occasion, I myself get pains behind my eye, and it's nothing to worry about. If the optician had a look at you, they would've picked up optic disc swelling, which is usually pretty obvious. If you're really worried, ask your GP to refer you to the local Eye clinic, for a check up, and they'll do some more tests.

I had something similar and was getting headaches and odd colours in front of my eyes. Turned out I couldnt see properly out of my right eye, something to do with a fluid build up in the Macea layer.

Anyways optician was great and diagnosed it spot on and 8 months later I have 90% back and no more pains. Turns out it was stress related and I just had to sit it out - was freaky though as had to get loads of tests.

Whats was more worrying was the fact the optician knew more than the NHS specialist and had better kit too..

Anyway good luck and try not to worry too much!

I am fine thank you all for the concern.
I have been on alot of steroids to reduce the brain swelling, anti-seizure drugs, drugs to stop my stomach being damaged by the steroids. I also take pain killers if I have any pain what-so-ever, which I don't.
Back to the story, I was kept under observation until the friday when I was discharged and went on my merry way. I was given boxes of drugs and special instructions, lots of steroids make you manic and hungry all the time, its great fun. I was given an appointment with the neurologist 2 weeks later, 2 weeks ago. I have been having weakness in my thighs, calves and a couple of my toes have been numb since the operation, but hurt if I straighten them! I have a great scar across my forehead which I shock people with and my head has been partially shaved which is annoying me now, its just too short for my liking, even 4 weeks later! I was told by the surgeon that she put a large plate and pins made of titanium in my head, how fun! I better not go anywhere near any large magnets or metal detectors. I am house bound, I am not taking a bus to the shops, its not me! I am a driver and I want to drive!
I went to see the neurologist 2 weeks ago, he told us it was a Grade 2 astro-cytoma. It doesn't mean much to me either. The grades are from 1-4, 1 is what kids can get and 4 is potentially lethal, so I was fairly low down. A simple large cell structure and he was quite satisfied with me. I am having another MRI in June and they'll keep an eye on it every few months, if its still growing and the worst comes to the worst they may need to use radio therapy to kill it off. He said potentially a year without my licence but it depends on my recovery rather than the seizures!

My parents went away on holiday last week, they came back yesterday. My condition ruined it for them, they were worried about me all the time. We have very nice family friends, I only had to prepare 1 dinner for myself, the other nights of the week I was at someone elses house eating! They also took me out for drives rather than tv and internet all day. It was ok in the end, I had a list on 10 numbers to call if I had a seizure. People kept on phoning me offering to take me to the shops and things, it was really good of them.

The other thing is that I've been saying "absolutely" alot since I came out of hospital! Its very strange. "I am absolutely fine, thank you!"

Had it a couple of years now checked out by optician during eye test six months ago, nothink found. Its like a localised occasional headache behind that eye which is recently getting more pronounced, especially when i get stressed. Anyone have similar?
I have something that sounds similar, except that there's always a slight ache, and if I'm tired or stressed then my eye feels like it's throbbing. Had it 12 years, and it started when I had my first iritis attack while in the US on a work trip.

Touch wood, haven't had an iritis episode for several years, but even now I can feel the faint ache behind my eye.

Been very extensively checked, tested etc and nothing ever found.

Main thing I've become aware of is that the ache is worse if I didn't sleep in complete darkness the night before, so I generally wear a eye mask.

Sorry for the thread resurrection but I need to update everyone.

I had a month of radiotherapy after the Drs found a concerning "high-spot" on the other side of my brain, that was zapped for 30 days.

I had my last scan yesterday and saw the neurologist and they are very happy with my progress. The high spot has gone and the original brain tumour is subsiding!

A massive relief for my family, me and my extended family but the news has not really sunk in properly for me yet. It was 4pm yesterday I was told.

Top banana, glad to share your great news mate.

in reply to the OP have you asked about 'Cluster headaches'
I suffer from the odd migraine but am in the middle of a Cluster spree, they last about 6 weeks and then just go again. It's very like a migraine as in it's there all the time just waiting to kick in. The POW have this you it bites like a pit bull not letting go and pummelling you into submission. A quick shot of IMIGRAM in yer arse and all's well again...until the next BANG!

you can take three shots per day, this is usually enough to keep the bastid at bay, but it's still there...you just get used to it.

Dear Ted,
I'd like to apply for the position of PH Doc in Residence. I could sit here all day telling people on P&P to stop wasting their time posting on the internet when they have access to NHS Direct, their own GPs, modern hospitals with emergency services etc and can get an authoritative opinion combined with treatment.
My rates are very reasonable - £5.00 every time I write "Get ye to a doctor!"
I think you will find that I am amply qualified for this job and have had all the necessary police checks to prove that I am not a kiddy fiddler.
Yours sincerely
97 (Dr)
