I think that all stemmed from when they got cornered on that petrol station forecourt in Alabama with Hammond's 'Man Love Rules OK' truck. Hammond and Clarkson both said 'we're not gay, we've got children', then realised May hadn't. Seems to have stemmed from there and just replaced the 'Hammond's had his teeth whitened' joke as a TG 'meme'.

A good point actually... was that the series before they did the 24h race at Silverstone? If you looked at the flag stickers on the car/drivers helmets (no double entendre intended), RH and JC had Union Flags, May had a Rainbow.

They also made reference to it on one show I recall, where they picked a 'handsome bloke' from a crowd and said something along the lines of "careful, May will be all over him". IIRC anyway but I definately recall the reference.
