VAT is charged on "hot prepared food". Has always been the case.
Also, a licence is required for selling food 'at above ambient temperature', i.e. toasted sarnies.

Daft, isn't it?
Theres a service station down the A19 from Sunderland that has a sign stating this. You're not supposed to buy coffee after a certain time, because they need a really expensive licence to serve it.

Utterly fking stupid.

Late night catering/refreshment licence.

It depends on your rateable value but it can be as high as £635 for the application and then £350 per year.

And that's just to sell hot food or drinks between 11pm and 5am.

If you're selling alcohol... it's double!

Another labourchunt tax.

Just been to subway for my lunch, the sub of the day was usually £1.99 for 6 inch.
I think the bigger question here that everyone seems to be avoiding is why on earth did you only half a 6 inch you big pansy? Surely it can't even be considered lunch unless you go for a full footlong!! hehe
Oh, dont worry. This was just my pre-lunch lunch. Needed something at 12 before a client meeting conviently planned to be done prior to an Italian meal in a nice restaurant in town!

Its always been the case that you don't pay VAT on a digestive biscuit, but then you put chocolate on it, it then becomes a "luxury item" and therefor attracts the dreaded.

Just been to subway for my lunch, the sub of the day was usually £1.99 for 6 inch. Walked in there today and its now £2.19. Its 20p, I didnt think much of it, but asked the guy as a bit of general conversation why the price increase. Was expecting the 'price of fuel' point, but he goes on to say there is a tax on hot sandwiches and eating in, so the price has increased.

Firstly, I dont believe him in the slightest, and found it rather funny. But just to satisfy my mind, is this true? I wouldnt be surprised if there was a tax on it. Fair play to the guy though, if there isnt a tax and made it up, he'd probably be able to convince a few people out there
I own a number of Subway franchises and would like to clarify that the £1.99 Sub of the Day promotion was too expensive to run. In the past 6 months the food cost has risen significantly (mainly wheat and tuna has seen the largest price increase) and this in turn resulted in Subway owners losing money on the £1.99 Sub of the Day promotion. The extra 20p is to help prevent the promotion being a loss making exercise. It is true that VAT is chargeable on hot and eat in sandwiches but this is taken out from the price, not added to the price of the sandwich. Therefore, you were probably served by a muppet that didn't know what he was talking about and blamed VAT as the reason for the increase. I personally don't blame the guy because there has very recently been a VAT ruling against Subway regarding their zero rated position which has resulted in huge penalties for many Subway owners which has probably confused the guy that served you.

Fancy opening one in my office? There is atleast 6 of us here that would happily eat subway for lunch, even at increased prices, as the food here is wank and the nearest subway is about 7+ miles away.
Surely the 6 of us plus possibly more would allow the business to break even in say 2055?
Maybe?
