Where the hell are you lot getting 1 or 2p an hour from? you pay for your electricity per KWH which is 1000 watts an hour, so 1 or 2 watts in an hour isnt a lot....

Doesn't seem a lot and i'm anything BUT an eco warrior - add it up over a year, say its on standy 20hrs a day while you are asleep/at work and at 2p/h its £145 a year.

All adds up!
That seems an awful lot.....that'd be between 20 and 25 percent of my whole leccy bill for the year....

P.S. - the only true way to find out for yourself and prove a point is to buy one of these:

http://www.theowl.com/

I did, found stuff that was costing me a fortune (Immersion heater timer broken, on all time!!!) and realised what actually cost me nothing to leave on (Sky+ and TV).

PS3 burns loads, I have that on as little as poss (standby is very economical on it, so it spends most time on that)

Roughly 2 or 3p an hour max.
That much?

I've recently taken to turning everything off except sky+ (so it can record stuff!)

So thats Amp, Xbox, PS3, Wii, Active Sub, TV,

Even at a penny an hour each thats £36 per month (20 hours a day standby!!)

Golly.
hehe, yea I kinda need to give the full story. I got an amp, a wii and a ps/3 running too although I do power-off the ps3 and amp and leave the wii on standby.

I dont' turn anything off.

TV doesn't even have a button for off - i'd have to do it at the plug.

Humax box - same again i want it in standby so it records when i'm not there. Its no use to be being switch off.

Amp - standby.

Sub - on.

Its so annoying to sit down o nthe sofa - get comfortable, grab the remote, and find out that you can't flick the TV on cos someones turned it off. Drives me mad. I'[m paying for convienience more than anything.

And that soemthing i'm happy to do.

I leave my TV, Sky box, Bluray, Surround thingy, Wii, PS2, 3 x kids TVs, our bedroom TV and DVD, microwave, ovem dishwasher, washer, drier, PC and all peripherals, fax machine, night lights in kids bedrooms, 2 fridges and a freezer and underfloor heating in our en-suite and all that lot together uses less than 5p an hour overnight.

No way is it 2-3p hr. 3p/hr would be a device using 250 watts left on constantly; a high spec PC playing games would probably draw about that. Or, say, 4-5 (non energy saving!) lights.

Leave my Sky + box on 24 hours a day. Turned the setting off that puts it into standby during the night, working shifts i can be up any hour of the day and i dont want some device telling me when it should be turned off.
Anyway whats the point in turning it off when its designed to record my favorite programs when i'm not there!
If you put your sky+ box in to standby it just stops running the process that's generating a picture, it still records the programs you want. If you actually turn it off at the wall though it obviously won't.

Indeed for it to be 2p/hour it would have to be about 150-200W to leave them on standby - I think not !!!!

I wonder how many people turn their microwave off at the mains because surely that clock consumes a lot of power?...
Your Sky box will come out of standby to record your shows.
Mine didnt, and i have never tried it since they did the update and i havent tried it since.

I'm happy with the amount i pay for my electricity and i have a lot more power consuming devices lying around than a tv and sky box..

I turn mine off and also switch microwave off at pocket when not in use.

I also switch kettle off at pocket but that's more so my kitten doesn't stand on the "On" switch and boil it dry. Again.

My Sony Bravia uses 0.3w on standby - I can't even register a change on my OWL watt meter between standby and fully off.

Not tested the Sky HD box yet, but as the poster above stated, 14w is not that much. Probably uses a bit more when they update the Sky Anytime content.

It was more of a pain of it turning itself off during late night telly after i get home from work more than anything. As i have said i'm happy to leave it on, i pay the bills at the end of the month, there are worse things to worry about than a sky box!!

Does switching it off "at pocket" mean you don't pay for it?...smile

My standard Sky+ box consumes 24 watts with the box powered on, and 11 watts in standby (internal HDD powered down).

So, 11 watts will cost 3.4 pence per month to run, based on electricity costing 13 pence per Kilowatt hour.
Most TV's consume around 1 watt in standby...which is 3p per month.

While you were watching it? We've had our sky+ box for a couple of years now and I've seen some shoddy software in my time but I've never seen anything as unreliable and as crap as the stuff on the sky+ box. Keep thinking about digging the tivo out of the loft and signing up to that again.

So you're willing to shorten the life of a load of expensive kit to save a tiny amount on electricity?

And in true ecomentalist style you're not taking the whole picture into account. It's not as if that is wasted electricity is it? 90% (at least) will be radiated at heat, so it's going to warm your house. Granted if you're going away for a couple of weeks power it off, but during the winter having a load of kit of standby is like having a lovely little 100w panel heater in the corner of the room.

You could always get her to buy one of these:

http://www.ecohamster.co.uk/product_info.php?manuf...

I use and have my Sky Box plugged into the always on switch, and when I turn the TV on using the remote, everything else connected it gets power and therefore enters standby mode. Not sure of the savings, but with about 5 bits of kit being totally off when I turn my TV off I'm sure there is a saving over the year.

Yes while watching it, the box cant tell if the telly is on i dont think. I thought there was a problem with it when it started going off, but it seemed strange that it was occuring the same time every night (1 or 2am iirc). The last straw was when it missed a recording one morning while it put itself into standby the night before, that was when i discovered the new settings in the box kindly supplied by Sky.

Never tried to record out of standby since so not sure if that is still the case with my box or if it is a fault with it.
