Nice town!
The dog sometimes takes us for walks on the canal there.

Yeah it's ok here, but we have talked about moving further south at some stage, Questembert / Malansac sort of area. Maybe in a year or so, some good roads around here though.

I wanted to buy a house near the canal not far from Malestroit. It had a driveway long enough for at least six (old) cars. I was over-ruled. I can fit in three or four down here though (Charente-Limousine). wink

I will be driving a virtually empty car from the Cote d'Azur to the UK in mid-April and was hoping to find someone who needed some stuff transported, in exchange for a contribution toward my costs. Does anyone know of a website/classifieds where I might find such a person? I've put an ad up on the local AngloInfo already but no luck. I know its a bit of a long shot...

I'm in Chamonix. Been here since November (well apart from work taking me to La Plagne, St Johann in Austria and Lake Garda)

Just been running about in a C2GT (now for sale) but bringing my V2 WRX STi out in 2 weeks time.

Anyone local to me?

I've been living in the Bourgogne for the last few years. In the Morvan to be more precise. Nice and quiet, with some great driving roads.

Well, it's taken longer than anticipated, but fingers crossed, it looks like the move is on the cards well and truly now. It's only taken a divorce and three years to get here! Thankfully my new partner has always wanted to move to France and she's got a grasp of the lingo already, as will I, in time.

A proper recce into Brittany (Morbihan area) and the Poitou-Charentes areas is in the diary. In fact it looks like we're going to rent for a few months, or perhaps a year to get a proper flavour.

So, who of you are still in France? Is the lifestyle still what you were looking for and do you have any more tips/pointers?

Many thanks!

:-D

I'm 20 mins from Angouleme of Circuit des Remparts fame. This region supposedly gets the second most sunshine hours in France after the Cote d'azure, and this summer was certainly a cracker.

I am just coming to the end of my 11th summer in the Loire Valley, Saumur.

Life in retirement is great here - just don't let the bureaucrats get you down. You will find that they try very hard.

Integrate and make friends with your neighbours, don't talk politics.

Enjoy

Just completed our first year here 40 minutes south of Angouleme. We started looking in the Charente but found the landscape flat and relatively boring. Once we got to the Dordogne, we found the area and the house we liked. Glad we have made the change.

Gites may not be all that you imagine. We wanted one or more but having spoken with people over here who have, or had, gites, they say the rewards do not reflect the effort and hassle. The French paperwork and taxation system also can hamper the dream.

I would suggest renting first, if possible, then you can decide whether the area is for you.

not far from Smiffy wavey

been a tough couple of years apart to get where we're at now (renovating) but just turned a corner and life is getting better and better by the week.

so so glad we choose here to lay our hat as a base, sympathyse with Smithy, no way I'd want to run any business here other than property rental.

but then the reason this place retians its beauty & peace is because commerce is kept at bay.

Been in Normandy for just under a year, moving to Centre region (south of Bourges) in 5/6 weeks.
Slightly different circumstances to most of you though, I was born here, went to the UK for a year of industrial training to complete my french degree and ended up staying 23 years !
Decided to return "home" (not sure where home is these days) because our parents (my wife is also French) are getting older.

Still in sunny Charente after 13 years. I am near to the limousane region so not so flat. We had our first frost this morning.

Working as a plasterer/builder with plenty of work. Nice place to live also a great base for traveling onwards into Europe.

The track day scene is good also.

Happy days.

Still based nr Malestroit, still very happy especially now the new garage is finished, 6 cars in there at a squeeze.

Morbihan is a big department, the Northern end is cheaper property-wise, but the southern bit is warmer from my experience.

Give us a shout if you need any help / advice for this area.
